Separation anxiety at odd times

My nearly 9 month old has been getting slightly worse on the separation anxiety issue.
I can take him to the gym and leave him in the creche without a backward glance for an hour whilst I go to my class.
I can leave him all day with my mum/in laws whilst I go out
If I'm at home with him though he'll only play for so long wanting to be picked up - he's crawling, so I always take him to whichever room I'm in and let him crawl around my feet with toys to play with. If I leave the room, I talk to him whilst I'm out the room. If I'm with him and other people, he won't go to anyone else (including dh) but if dh then takes him away from me to another room, he calms down and will play happily - he'll also allow others to pick him up if I'm not there. So, the pattern seems to be that if I'm there he wants me only but if I'm not, he seems to be quite happy !!!
It's driving me a bit bonkers but I presume it's a phase I have to live with. He starts nursery 2 days a week in two weeks...so on the basis of the current patterns, he may be ok going there but to expect some crying.
Does this pattern sound familiar to anyone.?

Totally the same as my 3 months old DD! I think LOs 'lock on to' whoever's there with them and start to get twitchy if no-one is paying attention to them (empty rooms etc). I think they panic.
