My 4 month old has become super fussy and crying all the time out of nowhere. In thinking it through have a feeling it may be early teething. What were your experiences with teething, signs, ways to survive, etc.??? Thank you!

calpol!
Get a nice squidgy teething ring and put it in the fridge, then let them chew it. Also mine used to like chewing my finger.
They dribble like mad and cry quite a lot. Also mine got really red cheeks.
Ds1 seemed to go through it for ages before his first tooth appeared!
Hope this helps a little bit.

SydneyB · 30/03/2007 20:30

Does teething affect feeding sometimes? i.e does the sucking hurt them a bit. My 4 mon

SydneyB · 30/03/2007 20:31

oops. my 4 month old has got a bit fussy recently and sometimes when b/feeding gets all grizzly as if in pain. is it ok to give calpol daily??

lulumama · 30/03/2007 20:31

red cheek, or cheeks, dribbling, unsettled, runny nappies, gnawing, off their milk

teething powders, letting them chew your finger, a teething ring, massaging the gums, mine both teethed for ages and ages, before any teeth appeared

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:31

Yeah, they can be a bit funny with food too.

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:33

I gave mine calpol when he was really grizzly, and also before bed so he would sleep better.

CorrieDale · 30/03/2007 20:34

My DS's only real sign was his gum bulging out a few days before the tooth appeared. Sure, he was dribbly, and a bit cranky at times. But since no teeth appeared until he was 8 months old, I have to assume that these were just signs that he was dribbling and feeling cranky!

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:34

Yeah, they do seem to be teething forever before a tooth appears!

SydneyB · 30/03/2007 20:37

What would you all say is best remedy for teething? Someone told me about a miracle herbal powder but can't remember what it was called. Loathe to pour in Calpol willy-nilly for the next few months.

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:46

teetha is one herbal one, and there are some that are in little white sachets, and i cant remember wha tthey are called. The sachets are quite small and you just put them on the babys tongue. They are really good! Just cant remember what they are called!

lulumama · 30/03/2007 20:47

ashton and parsons are good powders, you can get them most independned chemists also anbesol is good

also don;t like to use too much calpol

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:48

Thats it lulumama!

powder28 · 30/03/2007 20:48

Anbesol was another one I used, really good

GibbonInARibbon · 30/03/2007 20:57

I find nelson teetha the best powder, not the cheapest but it is camomile. Like lulu, I prefer homeopathic remedies where possible. If it chills my teething DD out it will work on any baby

Thank you! How fussy did this make your little ones? My guy is a mess and on a virtual nap strike as well, versus 4 hours a day normally.

omg...I remember saying to family and friends that someone had come in the night and swapped babies....My poor DD doesn't do teething very well, she started at 3 months and has recently cut her bottom two (6 months)
I just tried to remind myself how painful tooth ache is and it wasn't her fault...although was tempted on more than one occasion to give her to a passing stranger

It comes in fits and starts usually, as the teeth move down the gum. It is hard but does pass

mamijacacalys · 30/03/2007 21:13

When it gets really bad and we are in snot overload (in our house both dcs teething accompanied by snuffles and colds) prefer Medised to Calpol as has a decongestant and helps them sleep.
Although agree with Lulu that we don't like to give too much.
Like the Ashton & Parsons powders too.

SydneyB · 30/03/2007 21:57

OMG, DD has had snuffles too and just assumed cold! So, this is it, teething is here. Oh gawd. And does sometimes feel that someone replaced lovely DD with a monster child.

My DD also very chesty when teething Lovecat!
She is 9 months next week and has just finished cutting her 6th tooth.
She started 2 months ago and we have been going in cycles of:
snuffles/tooth coming out/less snuffles getting better/more snuffles as next tooth starts,
so have been getting a few sleepless nights!

dionnelorraine · 01/04/2007 16:28

My dd used to get awful nappie rash. the acid in her wee just burnt her skin off! (quite a normal teething symptom I think) I had to get an empty pot and mix sudocrem and vaseline together. Worked a treat!
Lots of bonjella for her gums (you can get special teething bonjella these days) and calpol! That should see you through!

dionnelorraine · 01/04/2007 16:29

Teething really lowers ammune system too, so colds and coughs are easier for babies to catch.

mamijacacalys · 01/04/2007 17:05

Yes, DD has had nappy rash as well. But I have found Metanium to be a lot better then Sudocrem (after reading another Mnetter's tip!).

oremstango · 03/04/2007 20:06

Thanks everyone- I almost didn't believe it as he calmed down afterwards but my little guy is indeed teething at 17 weeks (and was 5 weeks preemie) as I just saw the first one coming through this evening. Wouldn't have expected it this early!
