My DD is 3.3yrs and still has a daytime nap from 2ish to 4.30ish. I feel very fortunate to have a break during the day but what i was wandering whether it is normal. She goes to bed at 8pm (so she can spend time with DH). The reason I ask is that alot of my friends have with children of the same age are really suprised that she still sleeps and think it is very unusual.

ive just put a similar thread in the sleepy bit. I dont think its odd actually, and the fact she goes to bed at 8 is great (lucky to get mine down by 9) mine is 18m and def needs kip, a friends nephew is 4 and still needs a few hours, not sure how that will work at school but hey.

DS needed a long nap at this age too. As long as she is sleeping well at night, I would just make the most of it and not worry about it.

hebetalbot · 30/03/2007 16:15

apologies if i've started a discussion thats going on elsewhere - i am very new to all of this. I am glad you don't think its unusual. DD is a very busy girl who also just loves her sleep. The school thing does worry me though. She starts next year.

dont apologise, i was just thinking the twighlight zone tune out loud at our shared thoughts

mummydoc · 30/03/2007 16:29

my dd2 is 2 +1/2 and sleeps for 2 - 3 hrs every day and goes to bed at 18:00 , long may it continue.

dancer77 · 30/03/2007 16:29

My ds is 3.3 too and still needs a nap in the afternoon otherwise he's too tired to eat his tea. He goes to bed between 8.30 and 9 and wakes up about 8.30 next morning

hebetalbot · 30/03/2007 16:37

I just find that if DD has not had a nap her behaviour is really difficult to manage. She just gets 'high' and becomes naughtier and naughtier!!

my ds is 3.6 and has his nap somedays but not others. goes to bed at 7.30 if he hasn't, 8.30 if he has, but usually has his nap. wakes up at 7 whatever! i'm not worrying about school, he won't go fulltime until sep 08 and i have friends whose children have half hour when they get home from school

hebetalbot · 30/03/2007 16:52

Thats really good to hear! I shall just count myself very lucky and not fret about it anymore!

your friends are only surprised because they are jealous...I am..lol My 3.5yr old is super hyper and goes to bed at 7pm but is up at 6am and will not sleep in the afternoon at all. I would LOVE for him to still have a sleep but he pretty much gave up daytime naps at 18mths.

exbury · 30/03/2007 17:06

My niece is 4.5 and they live in France - she still has a nap in the middle of the day at school - and at home at weekends / on half days. Since DS hasn't slept in the day since he was 2.5 we do find it a little restricting when they come over (DNiece has to have her nap) but as long as it works for you then why not?

Piffle · 30/03/2007 17:08

hey be grateful my dd is 4.5 and still naps 2-3 times a weeks for 2.5 hrs

Great as I have newborn so rest is invaluable

themaskedpoEAster · 30/03/2007 17:10

dd has just stopped her naps (she will be 3 in June)

Oh how I miss my one hour 'me time' - on the other hand, she is at nursery school for 3 hours twice a week .. so there is a silver lining to my cloud!

Oblomov · 30/03/2007 17:20

Ds (3.2) has nap every day.
For one hour.
At nursery, all his friends do aswell - thus suggesting to me, that it is still the norm at this age.
HTH

hebetalbot · 30/03/2007 17:51

I think that exbury has hit the nail on the head. I do get comments that it is restrictive (which I can understand) so I am often left with the impression that it unusual.

we struggled from 14 months

It took another year before it was gone altogether and bedtime took place at a respectable hour i.e. between 7 and 8 instead of 11.

i am .

mm22bys · 30/03/2007 18:19

My DS1 will be 3 in May, and he still has an afternoon nap, but he is unusual amongst his friends.

I think he needs a nap - when he is at nursery for a full day he always has an afternoon sleep for about 1 3/4 hours.

I have tried the not napping approach, but those days he crashes at about 5pm.

We try to get him to bed at around 8pm, so DH gets to spend some time with him each evening.

His wakeup time in the morning does vary, from around 6am to 7.30am.

I really like the fact he still has a sleep most days, it does give me time to get some housework done, or just lovely "me-time". It's not too restricting though at his age, if he has an afternoon playdate we don't turn it down, we just go, but he always crashes on the way home!

FrayedKnot · 30/03/2007 18:40

DS has just turned 3, and I had all but abandoned his nap, but his behaviour is so terrible that I am starting to re-instate it on a couple of days a week.

Neither of us can cope!

He goes to nursery every morning so he gets very tired. If he doesn't nap, he goes to bed at 7pm so he can spend time with DH, although he could easily be ready at 6.30pm.

NannyL · 30/03/2007 18:51

My first charge needed his after lunch nap and had it up until he started school.... then he fell asleep on way home from school

Mum2FunkyDude · 30/03/2007 18:52

My sister is now 46 and has never missed an afternoon nap in her life...

bozza · 30/03/2007 18:55

My DS sometimes did this at that age. He has always needed a lot of sleep. But bear in mind that 2 to 4.30 is not feasible for 3.3 yos with older siblings in school. DD is 2.10 and will either have 2 hours or nothing dependent on me and DS. Today was nothing.

compo · 30/03/2007 18:56

It seemed on the surface that ds dropped his daytime nap at 2.6 in so far as he wouldn't stay in bed. However he regularly crashes out on the sofa in the afternoon - he actually sleeps better in the day sometimes than 6 month old dd....

Oblomov · 30/03/2007 19:08

m2funkydude - ha ha.
I like your sister.
I would if I could.

IamBlossom · 30/03/2007 22:06

My DS1 still sleeps every afternoon from 1-3 and would stay asleep if I didn't wake him up. he goes to bed at 6.30pm but wakes at 6am, so deffo needs his day sleep, I know what you mena about them getting "high" and naughtier and naughtier, when he is tired it's as if he just doesn't hear me, and is impossible to manage.

Plus, with him getting up so early, I need his sleep time to recharge my own batteries, although with DS2 (8 months) now on the move that is not so easy as it was............
