What's happened to my happy baby (4mo)?

Help - can anyone explain to me what has happened to my previously happy, smiley baby? Since passing the 14 week mark, DS1 has moved to a default setting of grizzling/crying/shouting, having previously been a very happy little girl. I know she has sore gums, but surely that doesn't make babies miserable for the next two years? Her sleeping patterns have also changed for the worse (up at least 3 times a night now compared to one or two previously) and she seems to sleep much more lightly and is harder to settle. I've read some of the 'sleep is for the weak' thread, but can anyone explain why things change at this point? And can anyone else tell whether, and if so, when things might improve again?

Arh! Me too! Mine is 4.5 and he has started waking in the night, he doesn't like to be put down, I used to be able to 'pop' into the next room to get something and leave him on the floor, he cries now if I am out of sight. Relatives say I make a rod for my back picking him up or going to him as soon as he cries at night. He has also started making these frustrated noises and arching his back, so I suppose he must be getting to a stage where he is more self aware and protesting? Ha ha. He is getting angry at stuff is this normal?

Bunsen, we've had exactly the same thing; our 16wo DD has become incredibly clingy, which is lovely in some ways but also very frustrating (housework is falling back to post-birth standards!) I just wish someone could give me more information about these supposed growth spurts - what are the developmental stages, why does it affect sleep patterns, temperament etc, and what should we expect as DD gets older? Anyone know any good books?

kellymom mentions about growth spurts at particular intervals

May I invite GuernseyCow Oremstango Bunsen to the December 06 thread, you're all welcome.
