Baby has had bad reflux for the last month, he has been on gaviscon- it's worked a bit but I still don't seem to have a happy healthy baby. Tuesday he was given ranitidine to go with it and since he appears to have been even more unsettled , crying almost all the time. It's only been 48 hours so will have to persist to see if it's a case of riding it out before it gets better .. but just wondered if this is similar to what anyone else has experienced and if it did get better for them?? 😢

It took two weeks to see an improvement and we needed to use it alongside domperidone, which keeps the food down or digested quicker (one or the other, my memory fails me!). We eventually moved onto omeprazole, which was far more effective but challenging to get them to take!

Good luck. It gradually improved by 5 months but my DC had reflux brought on mainly by CMPA, so taking dairy out was the real factor.

My DD has been on ranitidine since she was 2 months. It also took about 10 days - 2 weeks to see an improvement. For us, ranitidine only worked in combination with the anti-reflux formula. If you are BFing, you may consider giving your baby both ranitidine and gaviscon (please check with your GP).

Ranitidine may make your baby windy (in the short term). I remember it took me for ages to burp my DD properly and it had temporarily got worse before it got better.

Ranitidine effectiveness depends on the weight of your baby and the dosage may need to be increased as the baby grows. The initial daily dosage is usually calculated as 2-3msg per 1kg of your baby weight. It can then be reduced to 1mg per 1kg once ranitidine starts working. You can convert mg into mls (following the instructions on the bottle).

Some GPs may initially prescribe a lower dosage but will increase it to the higher level (up to 3mgs per kg of weight) if the baby does not get better.

We did not need to go for omeprazole but it would have been the next step if ranitidine had not worked.

Roughly 50% of all silent reflux cases are caused by CMPA. My DD case however was standard silent reflux not related to any allergies or intolerances.

Hi, my dd went onto ranitidine at 7 weeks and it was an instant unbelievable improvement. She got better and better as the days past until all her symptoms were under control. She started weaning off it at around 6-7 months and isn't on it at all now. She no longer has any symptoms. Has your baby been checked for cow's milk intolerance? The paediatrician told me they often go hand in hand so if ranitidine doesn't work they investigate for this.
