Why does my child do this?

My DS is 11 and for quite a while has been saying unnecessary things or making odd noises, for instance he will say "Mum...?" With a degree of urgency in his voice so you'll concentrate on him "yes DS?" and then he'll reply "why is there a potato on your head?" Or "Mum", "yes?" "am I a bunelin" (or some other made up word).

I don't know where I'm going with this...he's an intelligent boy with lots of friends, you can't really hold a conversation with him like you can with his little brother. It can be infuriating because you could be in another room cooking, for instance, then he'll call you in to say "why is there a tomato on the ceiling?" Sometimes dh and I are too tired to see the funny side.

Is he after something we're not giving him? How should I respond? Any suggestions gratefully received please.

Have you talked to school? Does he go anywhere else? I'd need to know if he does this all the time or only some of the time? How much control does he have over what he's saying?
It sounds an odd thing to do but could it be something that he has developed because he knows it winds you up and gets him extra attention?
Has he always done this or is it recent?!
Sorry more questions than answers.
