My little girl is 20mths old and not walking properly. She will bum shuffle really quickly and will stand holding the couch. She will attempt to walk using mine or her mums hand. But she seems really off balance. She was born at 36+6 weeks and only weighed 4lb 2oz. We are just waiting for a hip x ray result. But we had none of these issues with our other two children. Can anyone put my mind at rest? Please? Many thanks for reading.

my own DD was born at 38w3d weighting only 5lbs4oz. The doctors said she suffered IUGR.

DD ended up being delayed but eventually walked at 18 months. She's still struggling with speech right now.

Your daughter's delay could be due to a variety of reasons.
The most likely ones are fairly easy to correct with PT etc.

I know first hand how hard it is. I can only tell you this: the best way to cope with this is to be pro active. Push for her to be seen by as many specialists as you can and start PT if she's not already in.

Acting benefits the child, makes you feel less helpless and keeps your mind focused on positive things (her progress, new goals etc.)

She will be fine, with your love and support, she can only be fine.

Thank you. Hip x ray came back clear so its just helping her as much as we can. Just feel helpless

How is she doing otherwise? Does she talk? Understand language? Play appropriately with toys? Respond to solicitations?

Scarlettsdaddy · 20/07/2017 17:56

Yep. Says hiya bye bye. Interacts well and responds well to instructions

Then more likely than not,she only has a motor delay. Get her into PT as soon as possible

My DD didn't walk until she was 20 months. She was doing a lot of furniture walking and standing holding on to things. We took her on holiday to Portugal and the hotel complex was quite big. Lots of new things to explore. She took her first unaided steps on the beach which we have on video. Now she is walking, running, and climbing on everything. So try not to worry I'm sure she will do it when she is ready.

@heartofgoldmumof2: how old is your DD now ? As I said, like walked at 18 mo but she is still not a pro after 2 months.
She as this weird wide gait and her legs are still stiff when she walks.
She's far from running or going up and down stairs 😞

My DD has just turned 3. But I remember thinking a lot of times - will she ever walk?? She was really unsteady at first. Sorry I can't really remember how long it took for her to become steady.

I was coming on to post something similar.
My DD is almost 19 months and not walking independently. She has never crawled and has been bum shuffling since 14 months. I understand that it is very common for bum shufflers to walk late? She will pull up on your hands but not on furniture or anything. She will happily stand at furniture for long periods, but doesn't cruise, and wants to walk around all the time holding my hands. She won't try and walk unless she is holding both hands although her balance feels fine and I'm not convinced she needs the hands at all. She's only being doing the walking around holding hands for about a month and now much prefers it to bum shuffling.

TBH I think that it's mostly to do with her personality. She is a sensitive and cautious child. For example if she loses balance and bumps down onto her bottom she will cry, I see some of her peers running around and falling over without caring whereas she'd have a meltdown.

Her fine motor skills and language are fine, advanced even. She can build towers, eat with a fork, sing songs, say 30 or more words clearly.

Deep down I think there's nothing wrong, she's just a bit cautious and will get there soon. It's impossible not to worry though.

Oysterbabe · 23/07/2017 13:17

Just to add, she was born at 35+5 weighing 4lbs 13.

Scarlettsdaddy · 23/07/2017 14:18

That's almost exactly the same as our predicament. She will walk even holding one hand.

update
She has now taken three steps unaided

That's great news. Hopefully mine won't be far behind.
