School report

Hi, my daughter is in Y1 and got her end of school report yesterday. She is an August born so only just made it into this year group. She has always been where she should be academically but this year she is almost meeting expectations in 2 areas. Is this just across the year in general and children are judged the same if they are a September birthday or August birthday? She is bright and her reading is excellent. She passed the phonics test with 37/40.
Should I worry or not?

Hi, yes children in the same year group will be judged the same however try to remember that all children develop at different rates. It's the end of Year 2 and Year 6 that are the important milestone measures if you like. Passing phonics test is a really good thing and she will build on this vital knowledge. Don't worry too much, just encourage her to enjoy school and do lots of lovely learning at home through cooking, playing and going out and about. Most importantly read to her and with her.

It all levels out later on OP. My DD is a late July birthday and she's now well ahead academically (she's almost 13) but in reception, you could see that she was younger. She'd caught up and begun to overtake when she was about 9 or so.

I would make an appointment to see the teacher if it was me OP. I think to be told that she is where she should be and then the end of year report saying otherwise needs explanation. It's probably just missing it so nothing to worry about, but I'd want to know that for certain and where it was.

I don't know about the young/ old in year stuff but people putting everything down to this risks missing issues that would be picked up quicker in September birthdays. And the younger ones surely need more support not less....

I really wouldn't worry, if it was a massive issue/problem, the school wouldn't wait to put it in a school report - they would have asked to discuss the issue with you before now.

if it makes you feel better, ask to speak to her class teacher about your concerns and have your mind put at rest.

FWIW, kids all catch up at some point and it seems like your DD is doing just fine :-)

My august born prem twins got their reports yesterday and got working towards in a few areas. One passed the phonics screen and one didn't.

It's hard not to feel disappointed about it but they are effectively in the wrong year group for their age - they should be going into year 1 in September and would have had an October birthday.

I wish now we had fought harder to hold them back.

This is quite simply not the case. 40% odd don't achieve GCSEs in English and Maths at 16.

It probably isn't a massive issue OP, I agree with that but not everyone gets there in the end whenever they were born in the year.
