Could this be his molars coming in?

DS (nearly 1) has been very grumpy for about a week; won't settle to his toys (he normally amuses himself for ages), very clingy, lots of crying and some night waking (which is very unlike him). He's had a cold for what seems like months, there's lots of drooling and snot. I took him to the doctors and he doesn't have any infections or anything.

DH came home from work and said he'd been discussing it with some of the other dads and they had suggested it might be his molars (LOL at the thought of all these big military types earnestly talking about baby teeth ).

What do you reckon, does this sound familiar? He has been a little grumpy with his other teeth (he has 6) but nothing like this. I'm loathe to give him medicine unnecessarily but I'll make with the Medised if it is his teeth.

Thanks all...

Oh, and I have tried having a feel around his mouth but he HATES it and I got bitten very hard!

Sounds to me like it might be.... fwiw, dd2 had less problems with her molars than with her front teeth

Twiga · 22/03/2007 09:23

No advice but lots of sympathy - in mid teething hell here too, never known dd to be sooo grumpy! Hoping seeing grandparents this weekend will be good distraction. Hope they come through soon for you

Sympathy back to you, Twiga... we're about to go off to Toddlers, where I'm hoping he'll be distracted by soaking himself at the water table!

Who'd be a baby, huh...

ds1 much more bothered by his molars coming through than with any of the others so far - thoroughly grumpy. Is your ds sticking his fingers in his mouth at all?

littleEasterlapin · 22/03/2007 11:37

He sticks EVERYTHING in his mouth... but yes, fingers as well now, is that a sign?

Meant to say earlier that if you've not used Nurofen for babies yet you may find it more affective than Calpol. It certainly seems to have more of an impact for us - bongela also goes down well but is risky for the fingers of the parent applying it ! Our morning has been rotten, about to serve up some lunch and hoping a nap will help things.

littleEasterlapin · 22/03/2007 11:49

We don't use Calpol, we use Medised which seems quite good... I tried some Calprofen, but it didn't have much effect... will try Nurofen.

We haven't used Bonjela because I read something about too much numbing their throats or something horrendous... I think I need to get over myself and get down to Boots!

DS1 chewed his fingers quite a lot when the molars were coming, yes.

Washersaurus · 22/03/2007 19:52

DS shoved his whole hand into his mouth (as well as everything else) when his molars started coming through. He was really really grumpy. Have you tried the Natural Teething Granules (got mine from Boots)? They seemed to instantly soothe DS' gums.

leifmum · 08/12/2007 14:44

has anyone had experience of using baltic amber necklaces to soothe teething pain?

minouminou · 08/12/2007 20:14

oh...grotty grotty grotty
ds has been cutting his canines and premolars all at the same time, and we have had days o' hell when he's been screaming really sharply (i guess as the pain peaks)
try infant anbesol, as bonjela's a bit lightweight tbh
in fact...try anything, as it just seems so painful for them
as well as the anbesol, we used medised in the evening, and calpol in the day
he also liked to chew on really hard knackebrod (rye bread, like ryvita plus circular, and better) i guess it helped to cut the sharp points of the teeth through his gums.
hope it's over soon
