I'm a first time mum with a 6 month old and im neurotic with my son at the best of times, but at the moment he's rolling around like crazy and loving his new skill which is fab....

But I went in to him this morning hysterically crying at 5AM (very unlike him) and he was asleep on his front and clearly quite distressed, I think he was trying to turn back over but couldn't in his sleepy state.

Is this safe ??? Can anything happen to him and do I need to discourage It??? I'm panicking and will be sleeping on the floor in his room for the foreseeable if I don't get some advice on this !

Dd2 learnt to roll at about 2 months and the first things she always did if you put her down to sleep (awake or asleep) was roll onto her front.
They say once they can move themselves round the risk is lower.

It's completely normal lovely. The only thing is that he might wake up crying because he doesn't want to be on his tummy any more and can't roll back (my son used to do this).

As soon as they've learned to roll most babies sleep on their tummies at some point. Once 6 months, SIDS risk drops significantly. Also, once baby has learned to roll, it isn't very dangerous for them to sleep on their tummies. Don't stress over it. You can't stop him from doing it unless you watch him all night and keep turning him back. He'll be okay Smile

My DS started rolling at 9 weeks, and from that minute on he would sleep on his front. I'd put him down on his back and within a minute he'd be on his front again. I spent two months barely sleeping, every night I'd stay up as much as I could to keep putting him on his back, he'd wake up crying, and then roll back into his front and fall asleep Confused

It was exhausting! Then one day DH explained that I can't watch him all the time, and that if he can roll he will be fine, so I decided to try to relax a little, and now he and I get much more sleep!
He's 15 months now and still sleeps on his front, with his bum in the air Grin

Thanks for all your advice ladies. I definitely need to learn to be more chilled Wink

The rolling wasn't the issue last night though.... this heat. He absolutely hates it. Waking up sweaty and crying every hour. 3 hours sleep In 2 days. I'm starting to look like the guy from castaway. X

Once they can roll and flex it's OK because - as you experienced - if they get into a dodgy position they either move or wake up and yell.

My son was only comfortable on his front. As soon as they can roll over you can't really stop them. But I did wait until he could roll before I let him sleep on his tummy!

He actually loves sleeping with his bottom in the air ;)
