Poll please - exactly how long can colic go on for?!

8 week old (corrected age 3 wks) little man seems colicky (screaming/shouting-type cries, back arching, leg thrashing, straining and farting) on and off all day and all night. Have read the various threads on colic and it seems the bottom line is you just have to sit it out - but for how long? The books say it usually goes by 3 monthss - but that's also what they said about morning sickness and that was a complete lie in my experience! What was your experience of colic? Also, does anyone know if for prem babies you'd look at the corrected age - hope not as that would give me an extra 5 weeks of it!!

Sorry,she screamed for six hours.
Unbelievable

Crikey. Thanks for all the replies. Hoping for the 3 months rather than the 5.5! We are doing all the usual suggested things - gripe water, elevated head, tummy rubbing, sling carrying, cuddling, rocking, dummy, music, various ant-colic teats (he is ff). The only thing that really calms him is constant cuddling/sling carrying - just looking forward to being able to go to the loo / make a drink without having to spend the next hour calming him back down again because I've had to put him down for 2 mins! Interested in the cranial osteopathy thing - does this need GP referral? How much does it cost?

You don't need a GP referral, it's done privately and I really can't recommend it enough. Dd is now 3 so I can't remember exactly how muc it was but I think it was about £25 a session- she had 2 or 3 in the end but colic stopped after 1. Try this . I can recommend an excellent one near me but I doubt you're nearby! There are lots of clincs around now. DH had some sessions for stress and IBS and it helped him too.

Thanks Hayls although I couldn't actually get your link to work. Have googled and there is one local to me. One other question though - from what I've read the treatment seems to have a lot to do with the baby's head having been squashed during birth but DS was born by emergency CS as was breech and got stuck on his way out so presumably had no head squashing at all. Does anyone know if this means the treatment wouldn't help? Actually might post that qu as a separate new thread...

I'm not sure tbh but CO seems to be a good general treatment and it certainly wouldn't do any harm. TBH if the colic is that bad I'd be trying it out even if i didn't believe it would work, I remember it so clearly and was amazed when it did work. Try cranial.org.uk for local people. YOu should find that if you ring up and explain the situation they will tell you if they think they are able to help or not. good luck, let us know how you get on with everything.
