Travel with baby essentials - baby carrier?

Time to emerge from months of lurkerdom with my first question, I think

Both my parents live abroad so air travel with baby (4 months now) will probably become a way of life. In particular there's a trip to Hong Kong on the horizon in June, by when daughter will be 7 months old.

So far I've got the lightweight travel cot sorted - got a Samsonite bubble that I'm very happy with.

Now I'm trying to work out how we'll get around while abroad. Obviously I wont' be able to take a buggy, so I'm thinking backpack or baby carrier will have to be the way to go - preferably something that's lightweight, doesn't take up a huge amount of space, but that will allow me to carry baby securely for several hours at a time if needed. Has anyone got any recommendations?

(btw I'm not so sure about slings - the one I got never felt quite secure and sprogette didn't seem to think much of it either)

Until this very momnet I had never heard of an airline not letting you take the bugy to the gate so I agree check with your airline. A buggy is not usualy included in your allowance either.
I can recommend the ergo as well a mei tai may also be good and it is based on a chinese carrier too so if you love it you might find gorgeous embroidered one in Hong Kong
Even some of the most hardened baby wearers I know stil take a buggy to the airport even if you never use it in the bustle of Hong Kong you may find it invaluable at the airport as there is a lot of hanging around and your baby might get tired being carried so a buggy would be handy to pop her in and give her something to eat or a rest as she will always have somewhere to sit.

Like you said in Hong Kong itself like you said a carrier would probably be easier so just leave it at house/hotel. If you are used to a buggy everyday at home you will find it hard going to not have hte option at all while you are travelling.

am travelling to Australia in november alone with 4yo and 18mo to brisbane. Help! Anyone else done it? Do sedatives work>? Can 18mo get a seat? WHat do you get as extra? Any tips very welcome. sam

I'm off to Oz tomorrow with DH and DS1 (2.10) and DS2 (0.4). I am so not looking forward to it (the flight that is...can't wait to actually arrive!)

If you are travelling on your own with two kids, I would definitely get the 18 month old a seat. 18 month olds can be very heavy, and it is a long way to have to hold a child! We didn't start getting DS1 a seat till he was 23 months old, but we should have done so a lot earlier.

We have got DS1 some sedatives from the dr (wanted to do it safely). I tested it out yesterday and he slept from about 2 till 6 so we should be able to zonk him out for a few hours....

No other tips at this stage but will let you know how we got on.

Good luck,

Oh just seen you are going to Brisbane, that's where we're going too!
