More Questions about back carriers

DH are disagreeing about what back carrier for our 7 month old. I favour the Ergo but DH doesn't says he wants a framed one. what are peoples recommendations or avoidances for back carriers. (doesn't like ergo cos you can't get a waterproof cover and he doesn't think a frameless carrier would give us and DD the correct support)

We have a framed one from kelty
Only use it for holiday walking but it has been fine

Have a macpac - loved it when the children were small enough to go into it
It has an adjustable back length which is what swung it for us As DH is tall and has a very long back so it could fit us both comfortably. Also we found a shop that let us hire one for the day before we bought it so we could see if it was comfortable

We've got a macpac too and it's great, We tried out a friend's before shelling out. Our DS1 is now 16 months, but haven't used it much recently because we also have a newborn, but pals have used theirs until their kids were at least 2.5

Agree about Macpac. Apparently they are the only ones designed by a rucksack company rather than a baby company... if you see what I mean. So they know what they are talking about when it comes to comfortably carrying a heavy load without a frame. Macpac are known as particularly good rucksacks in the "outdoors"/walking world.

Hmmm Kelty is a backpack/trekking cpy too - they just don't sell their packs in the UK

We tried loads on in Ellis Brigham before deciding

We got a Vaude (think I've spelled it right) Jolly Comfort back pack for DS - Vaude are a mainstream outdoor company (I think they are german/swiss - their care instructions are quite a laugh as its translated direct from the german !). Anyway we've found it really good and it fits both DH and myself with most of the weight being carried on your hips - its got a good rain/sun cover and we invested in a head rest which means DS can nap. I think there are fair no. Vaude stockists across the country.

MuffinMclay · 19/03/2007 20:41

We've got a Vaude and it is great. DS loves being in it. I didn't get on with the Ergo at all (Think I'm too small).
I've used it twice a day, most days, for up to 45 minutes at a time. Dh has used it for 2 hours, with no problems. We're very different in build (I'm short, he's very tall and broad), and it suits both of us.

pros cons.

Ergo (or similar) you can feel your child you have a better idea if they are sleepy, wriggly narky etc. Framed carrier they are away from your body and you can't see them so you have no idea.

Good wide comfortable seated position and hip positioning in an ergo versus dangling from a narrow seat in some framed carrier.

They get your body heat and if they fall asleep they rest their head on your back (awww)

You can get baby wearing coats to cover the ergo which keep you both snug.

ergo folds up small and can fit in a bag to allow bigger ones to walk for a bit before scooping them up again.

However blokes love the gadget factor of a framed back pack so you may be fecked and just get one each!

Thanks for all your emails. Internet went down this week!!!! A Macpac maybe good as I'm 5'10" so maybe better if I can extend. Mrs Apron I think you maybe write about 2. I saw the Ergo' coat fleece wrap thing and I just couldn't wear it. I'd look hideous do you know if anyone makes a more coat style one?

the ergo extends loads. i am 8 st and dh is 15 and we use the same ergo carrier. you can also get v. good waterproof clothing for the child only.
