Two odd thing s I thought Id get your opinions on today
1, I girl I continually see without shoes on, she is about ... 5 and is at the leisure centre watching sport( not playing it) and then I saw her agin iN a supermarket without shoes on. Is that a bit weird?

e Would you do it? no negelect at all - Mum and girl are very normal etc

  1. Baby a bout 2 running aroung a celebrity cricket match wiht not a stitch on! Probably a thousand people there and this child is running around all afternoon naked

Appropriate or not?

perhaps the girl has a problem wearing shoes - bunions, for instance aren't just an old persons prob. It's odd but I'm sure there's an explanation.

A 2 year old running around naked - ok with me. I let my sons ran around naked in public sometimes when they were 2 years old. But I'd worry about the effects of the sun. At the back of my mind I'd worry about perverts, but I would try and keep that worry at the back of my mind. Sad world we live in.

I used to hate wearing shoes when I was little and I did used to walk around with no shoes on everywhere! Still do actually. I walk around the garden with no shoes on all the time and down the street. My husband does think I am a real hippy though

This is tricky isn't it. I would feel odd about my baby being naked in that context (he's 15mo but a great roamer around)...yet do not feel I'm paranoid about perverts. Naked on the beach or garden seems fine somehow. Just love those little bottties. Don't think it would offend me as such tho, even at the criket match. Mine go barefoot in the garden/house but elsewhere it's a safty issue, broken glass, dog pooh etc yeuch! 5yo no shoes in shop is VERY odd IMO. On the other side of the scale, a child in DS's swim class who can only be 6, maybe even 5, is changed by his mother with a towel firmly wrapped around him until he has pants and shorts on him...this is in a communal room, but there are only a few other mums and babies/children in there - isn't that a bit uptight???

Gulp - that could be my ds - 5 in a couple of weeks. Often takes his shoes off and runs around barefoot or just with socks on. He's never hurt his feet. I remember going barefoot as a kid too - it doesn't hurt because you've got less weight to bear. Mind you have to watch where you are - ie in the park with broken glass etc.

2 year old wouldn't bother me personally but it is rather a big gathering... but that shouldn't really make a difference ...

A lot of kids go barefoot everywhere in South Africa, considered very normal. My ds once walked barefoot down a street in Hackney aged 3 and this little girl said "Daddy! That little boy's got no SHOES on!!" in the same tone of voice as if she was commenting on him having two heads.

Wouldn't give a second thought about either, myself!

Toddlers specialise in being incongrous. he/she is probably insisting on wearing anorak and woolly hat today! Or tutu and wellies.

StickyNote · 10/07/2004 13:47

Blu, you've just reminded me that my ds also used to disrobe whenever the urge arose and was also seen regularly in those kind of combos! Bless.
