Not sitting up at nearly 8 months

My lovely DS is still not sitting up at nearly 8mo...and tbh he really doesn't seem like he's going to any time soon. He just wants to be on his tummy/rolling around, so whenever I try to sit him up he just lurches forward.

Anyone else with a late sitter/any idea how I can encourage him?!

If he's happy to be on his tummy that might be a good sign as lots of babies hate that until they are ready to start crawling. I think them leaning forward is the first step to sitting up, they gradually get more and more upright. Try positioning his legs so they are quite spread out to help balance, and maybe give him a toy to hold to focus on.
Does your area do one year checks? Ours used to do them about 10 months old so maybe jut mention it to them then, or mention to the HV at a weigh in. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about esp if there's no other concerns

Hiya

Our youngest the same age and exactly the same re; sitting.

Don't worry will be fine!

You asked for ideas; what I did with now 20 month old was; Sit them up surrounded by cushions, two high all round and let them learn, when they can do that, and keep themselves upright, go down to one cushion all round.

Lie them on their back and hold their hands; and do row, row, row, the boat gently down the stream, (kinda situps). Strengthens their muscles and also makes them laugh!

Hope that helps and don't worry!

8 months isn't particularly late at all!

Relax, if he likes being mobile it suggests he's physically fine Smile

All babies get there eventually. You don't see any adult struggling to sit up or walk. We all get there in the end

DS can't sit up from laying down yet but he can sit up from leaning on a pillow so he's nearly there.
It doesn't bother me.

I'm trying to give him plenty sitting up and playing with toys time and hopefully it'll help his core strength.

Ermmmm... I'm sure all will turn out to be well with the OP's baby but that's a rather ridiculous and insensitive thing to say. There are tens of thousands of adults (and probably many more) that cannot sit up or walk.

RibenaMonsoon · 21/05/2017 21:43

I didn't mean it that way. I meant that as babies we all learn at some point. You don't see anyone not being able to because they weren't able to develop that skill as babies.

Of course there will be some with medical reasons why people.can't sit up or walk but I think you probably knew that wasn't what I was referring to.

No offense was intended OP. I meant that we all get there some day.

If he's rolling etc that's him strengthening his core, developing the muscles he needs to sit. I would let him continue to roll around rather than propping him to sit.

My DS is only sitting steadily now at 9 months - a skill my DD had mastered by 6 months. I think there is a fairly wide range of normal. He also was keen on being on his tummy, is now pulling himself up to standing and crawling everywhere so I think he was focusing on different skills. Propping up with cushions does nothing to build muscle- just rolling around will do that.

Sparrowlegs248 · 21/05/2017 22:58

Ds1 didn't sit unaided of his own accord til past 9 months. He didn't really crawl. Walked at 12 months!

My son has just had his 10 month review and the health visitor said they don't start to be concerned until 10 months for sitting up. So plenty of time!

We got a Galt Farm playnest that really helped my son learn to sit x

Thanks so much for all the replies! It's reassuring to know I shouldn't be worried just yet...I'll just let him carry on rolling around and hopefully he'll get there soon.

I have actually tried the propping up with cushions thing but he goes mental/flops straight down onto his tummy so haven't had much success!!
