Hi, some advice please. My 17 year old ways to drop out of sixth form and go to college, (knows the course he wants to do). He's planning on taking the AS exams, then not returning. He has a part time job, which he says he'll get more hours for until college starts. He's doing ok at school. I'm devestated that he wants to leave. He's a clever boy, but is so disspondent with sixth form that he's given up really. Both me and his dad have been very supportive, I've not told him how I feel.
Should I meet with his tutor? And, where do we stand with regards to family allowance? Thank you in advance!

So if I understand this correctly, he is not dropping out of education but just signing up for a different form of education?

It might help if you were to pinpoint your exact worries here. Are you not sure he can get a place at the new course? Or is the new course vocational and you had hoped he would go to university? Or do you think he has acted impulsively and not thought this through?

My ds is doing the same and tbh I am very pleased: I knew the course he was on wasn't right for him, he has taken the trouble to think this through and get all relevant information himself, and like your ds he is sitting through his exams so not running away.

College still counts as education and won't affect benefits.

If he's not enjoying A levels, then doing a level 3 (A level equivalent) vocational course sounds a reasonable option.

You may get more responses if you post on secondary education. there is a BTEC Support Thread which might give you some info on how vocational courses run.
