Half crawl/half drag ..... normal development?

Ds is 7mos. He does this funny looking half crawl. It's like he crawls with his right-hand side but drags his left-hand side with his arm tucked under his tummy. He is my first so I'm not sure if this is part of the normal learning to crawl experience or if his left side is weak in some way. I'm having an anxiety ridden 24 hours.

Hi Portree, I wouldn't worry. 7 months is quite early to be doing this I would say, so that's a good sign. Not all babies crawl, in a proper crawling fashion IYSWIM! My friends ds who has just turned 1 crawls commando style (or like a person who's fallen out of a wheelchair as her dh says)

musica · 06/07/2004 14:49

Portree, ds did this - he was sort of on his tummy, and would reach forward with one hand, and then slither to catch up with the rest of himself. I think it was because he was an early crawler, and he couldn't support his weight on his hands and knees, so he developed his own way! He was crawling properly by 8 1/2 months.

tammybear · 06/07/2004 14:49

my dd used to do that. i wouldnt worry about it, as my dd is now running around like as if there is no tomorrow!

jampot · 06/07/2004 14:51

dd never "crawled" as such she used to pull herself along the ground - imagine how you would scamble under nets on an assault course - used to wreck her clothes. So when ds actually crawled it looked pretty freaky to us...

spacemonkey · 06/07/2004 14:58

my dd never crawled at all - she used to roll about on her side! Then she started walking at about 12 mos.

florenceuk · 06/07/2004 15:00

Sounds perfectly normal. DS did a commando crawl for quite a while - hell on clothes though.

maretta · 06/07/2004 15:12

My ds was exactly the same. He started off commando crawling at 7 months and then a couple of weeks later sussed how the big boys do it.

I think the only thing to worry about is that your shouting "omg, he's heading for the glass" and "eurgh, what's he eating this time" and everyone else's baby is sat gurgling and clean.

Anyway, I think you should be right proud of him. He's doing very well for his age.

Portree · 06/07/2004 15:57

Ladies, thankyou for your reassurances, it's what my rational head's been telling me but for some reason I seem to be stricken with anxiety that I've never had before regarding ds. Oh, should have said, he is 7.5 mos.

My dd used to drag her left leg behind her in a sort of shuffling movement and lever herself forward - all her trousers were worn on one knee .

clary · 06/07/2004 16:11

My oldest crawled backwards for about the first 2 weeks of moving...used to end up sittingup, not where he wanted to be at all with a very frustrated look! They soon modify to find the most efficient way to get about. Yes, 7mo is young so well done him!

Thomcat · 06/07/2004 16:12

Lottie comando creeps and bum shuffles as well.

Thomcat · 06/07/2004 16:13

She's still bloody doing though at 2 and a half!
People in restaurant last night thought it was hysterical!

Portree · 06/07/2004 16:25

I know I shouldn't compare ds to other babies but in my wobbly moments I can't help it. He has been moving for a while but he HATES sitting and is really not very good at it at all. And all the other babies in our group sit and play and can twist around and put their hands out to support themselves but ds is terrible at sitting. If I sit him up, he'll stay there for a moment, then he starts rocking - just pushes down with his heels and flings himself backwards or falls over to the side with a crash.

Actually, you know, I think I should go and eat chocolate or something and get off the board as I'll end up finding more things to get anxious and neurotic about.
