HOW OLD was your child when they went through the "Why? Why? Why?" stage?

My son says why a LOT. Like, more than any other child I know.

Wallace · 10/03/2007 22:24

can't really remember, maybe threeish?

brimfull · 10/03/2007 22:24

WHY?

Saturn74 · 10/03/2007 22:25

DS1 never really asked.
DS2 asked constantly from about the age of two until.....well, he hasn't stopped yet and he's now nine!

dd1 3.10yrs started at 3.2 and stopped at 3.9. Would have killed her if it carried on. DH just use to say stupid things back when he'd had enough she got the point that daddy had had enough:-

last letter of the alphabet
when
where
who
why what
his favorite was to just repeat why back over and over.
Could have killed dh too he just made her angry

nooka · 10/03/2007 22:30

Oh I remember that time! Now after a couple of searching questions ds and dd say, oh you don't really know about x, in a disapproving sort of way, I'll ask y instead... It was lovely when they thought I knew everything!

SpringisherePann · 10/03/2007 22:33

dd, when aged about 3 used to start with an innocent question...but then it was a horrible fencing match of "why?" as a response to every answer...sometimes for a half-day on the same 'thread'....

the classic started off with her asking "Daddy. Why don't rabbits wear crash helmets?".....

she is now 7 - less insistent but still regularly on the why question!!

Answer - no-one really knows how long you will be required to endure this for. Just don't be optimistc! Good luck

SpringisherePann · 10/03/2007 22:34

nooka - I had the opposite!

dd asked me"do you know everything?"

I said "yes".

workworries · 10/03/2007 22:34

DD is obviously an early developer then. She is 2.9 and has been saying it loads recently and for quite a while. Actually I think she has picked it up from her big brother who is 6 and still comes up with the odd 'why' question although his tend to be a bit more obscure. I don't think DS started with it so soon.

I would say that 3yos are worse for it, and then it gradually reduces. TBH I don't think DS expects me to know any answers - he has quite a downer on my general abilities. We went to my SIL's last week without DH "do you know how to get to Auntie X's, Mummy?" Cheeky so-and-so, I have been going there since before you were born.

Oops posted as my alter-ego. You will have to work out who I am.

Every converstation we have goes like this

"Ds, in a minute, I'm going for a shower"
"Why?"
"because I'm dirty"
"Why are you dirty?"
"Because I haven't had a shower today"
"why haven't you had a shower today?"
"because I haven't got round to it yet"
"Why?"
"Because I haven't had time yet"
"Why you not had time?"
"Because I've been busy getting you and ds2 ready"
"Why?"
"Because you need to get dressed and have breakfast, don't you?"
"Why do we need breakfast?"

And on and on andonand on until I want to SCREAM

dd2 will be 3 next month and why follows every sentence and it is driving me insane.
Yesterday we went to buy some new tropical fish and she had the poor man at the garden centre in a conversation for nearly 10 minutes with her asking why every time he spoke.

colditz · 11/03/2007 09:36

I love it when they do it to childless people. I very rarely step in. I love to see the panic on a person's face as they realise there is NO NATURAL END to this conversation.

The man was really sweet and because the conversation was about fish I think he thought she was genuinly interested.
