When did your child talk?

DD is 1 tomorrow and yesterday we had her 12 month check.

The health visitor that came out seemed a little concerned that she wasn't using words yet.
She can say "mama" "dada" and "nana" but she doesn't know what they mean and doesn't associate them with people so at the moment they are just sounds.

Her gross motor and fine motor skills she got top marks in so is just lacking in communication.

When did your children start to use words with their meanings?

I have 14 month old twins and it's made me realise how children are so very different. Their interests are different, one is very physical the other is much more talkative. Interestingly the physical one picked up signing really easily whereas the talker tries saying the word - milk and more are examples. Try signing, just make up your own signs or look up on you tube.

FFS blimmin HV putting fear of God into first time mums again. DS didn't speak much for ages, remember dada, then mummy, baba for banana, more, but wasn't speaking much at 18 months - he could follow instructions though and understood lots of words. Bizarrely one of his next words was purple (yet he didn't say easy stuff like dog / cat). I was panicking a bit because of blimmin HV and their list of words. DS started speaking a lot more about age 2 and now at 3.5 is the biggest chatterbox amongst his friends.

Thank you everybody.

I had her first birthday party over the weekend and had kids there between 1&3 and realised that they're all different, they're speech is all different and some can say more words than others at younger ages. Really reassured me along with all of your comments.

Thanks ladies Smile
