No guideline, just when you feel he's ready (and when you feel up to it!). Ds was about 2.5, dd was 20 months.

I think the time to do it is when they learn to climb out of the cot themselves ! otherwise if in a cot then when they are getting to big for it and if a cotbed just enjoy them being "safe" inside - my dd was 2 and my ds is 2 1/2 and still in his cot bed with the sides on. HTH

We bought a bed for ds1 (2.4) and put it in his room beside his cot (he's in a huge cot) to see if he was interested in changing from a cot. He hasn't shown any interest in sleeping in it so I'm just going to leave him as he is. A friend of mine who moved her ds into a bed at 2 says she wishes she hadn't because he keeps coming into their bedroom at all hours of the night!

Twiglett · 07/03/2007 12:04

DD (3 in May) last night - because she asked to

DS when he was 2 - because he started climbing out

pinkranger · 07/03/2007 12:05

DS - 2 years -
never got out of bed and dont now

Kbear · 07/03/2007 12:05

DD was 2 (the week she was 2)

DS was 2.5.

stressteddy · 07/03/2007 12:05

My ds climbed out of cot so we put him into bed with a bedside on. We also have a hook and eye lock on the door so it is "wedged" open about 4". He took to it straight away but would not have done it if he hadn't vlimged out

stressteddy · 07/03/2007 12:06

climbed! Although vlimbgling sounds good too!

Kbear · 07/03/2007 12:06

I had a bed rail for about four months then took it away and put a bean bag next to the bed so they had a soft landing if they fell out (probably only fell out a couple of times each!).

USAUKMum · 07/03/2007 12:07

DD was 2.10 and DS (2.8) is still in a cot and will probably be getting into his bed around the same time as DD as he will no longer fit in the cot (he's v. tall).

sandcastles · 07/03/2007 12:08

DD was 2.10. We purposely left her in her cot longer as we emigtrated last year & didn't want to upset her routine too much.

At the IL's she had a bed & a cot in her room. She spent the first night in the cot & the next night (and every one since) in a big bed...on her request.

We didn't have any of the usual in/out problems as she decided she wanted it & stayed put!

Bozza · 07/03/2007 12:10

DS 2.1, DD 2.1. consistent, me.

Littlefish · 07/03/2007 12:10

Dd is 2 and 3 months. She went into a bed last week. So far, she's only got out of bed once, but didn't come out of her room.

staceym11 · 07/03/2007 12:12

my dd was 16 month, but we had anohter baby on the way and needed the cot, and didnt want her to feel like she was being pushed out when the baby came so we did it asap, she wasn't really bothered by it at that age, we did have a few disturbed nights but only 1/2!

lissielou · 07/03/2007 12:17

ds is 22m and weve just moved him to a bed, coz he was balancing on the rail of his cot. weve had a few bad nights but he seems happier with a bed than he was with a cot

littleolwinedrinkerme · 07/03/2007 12:23

wow thanks for all the posts. She seems fairly happy at the moment and has not tried to climb out (maybe something to do with the grobag...) - maybe move to a quilt then see. Thanks for all the advise - sounds like the longer the better then re disturbed nights - maybe 16 yrs could be an option....

ds was 18 mths . he never really slept very well in his cot so we bought him a bed. we left the legs off for about 6mths so it was very low to the ground - he also has a bed guard and stair gate on the bedroom door - he slept like a dream - good bloody job as his sister was born about 3 mths later. (shes now 18mths by the way and i have no intention of moving out of her cot yet as she sleeps through and has plenty of room left etc)

Azure · 07/03/2007 12:51

DS1 was 2.3 and we kept him in his grobag in the bed for a couple of months, with a bedguard. We didn't have any problems with him climbing or getting out (benefits of a grobag).

hana · 07/03/2007 12:53

we've just moved dd2 into a bed at 25 months as we needed the cot for dd3 - it's been pretty awful. She's gone from being a fab sleeper to one who takes hours to actually fall asleep - she's up, down, out, playing with toys etc etc. I'd leave it as long as you can if you don't need the cot for a new baby! We left it as long as we could (dd3 is 5 months and really needed to be out of her moses basket) but woudl have been better if we maybe had borrowed a second cot instead

juuule · 07/03/2007 13:06

Dd (3y8m)still in her cot. She likes it there

twinsnikki · 07/03/2007 13:14

Hello All,

I moved my twins once they were tall enough to climb out. Around 2.

Had to put tons of pillows around the new beds, as they kept falling out.

However, good thing was, they like them so much the rarely get into mine!!

lovelymoo · 07/03/2007 13:25

Both of mine were around 18mths when we changed their cotbeds into beds.

doggiesayswoof · 07/03/2007 13:36

Dd is 2.7 and still in cot. She's not trying to climb out (yet...!) and still seems happy so I'm not rushing it.

Changed from a grobag to a cot quilt about 2 months ago cos she asked for it.

alexw · 07/03/2007 13:37

Dd (2.2)last weekend as she came out of night nappies. She has not been any trouble at all - ie no getting up and has waited every morning til we have gone in to get her! (What an angel!!)

boomie · 07/03/2007 14:05

DD1 was 2.9 - only cos we needed the cot for DD2. DD2 is 2.8 and still in her cot - looking to get her in a bed in the summer.
