Baby walks at 6 months! (News report)

In Telegraph

"In theory, Connie Robinson should have several more months knowing six-month-old Reuben is safe and sound where she leaves him.

Reuben, however, has other ideas and has left his mother nonplussed by getting to his feet and toddling about under his own steam while most babies of the same age are happy to lie back and watch the world go by."

I don't envy his mum!

ok, IF, I give up, can't beat that one... But don't believe your last one anyway!!!!!

my dd cruised at 6 months (sat at 3.5 months), and my dts were crawling at 7 months. It is a bloody nightmare. At that age, they are so far off from understanding 'no!' it is just impossible. With dd, I was terrified she was going to fall and crack her head open or something, I wanted to stick her in a straitjacket. It's def not something to be proud of.

Chocolate1000 · 06/03/2007 22:26

I would be quite worried and surely his legs won't be strong enough to hold him? A lot of babies can't sit up unaided at six months. I'd be interested to read what a padetrician/child podiatrist thought about this. I also think it's interesting that he's got older siblings - maybe they pulled him up until he got used to balancing?

Kelly1978 · 06/03/2007 22:33

oh their legs can def be strong enough to support them, I;ve first hand experience of this, it's the balancing bit that amazes me.

sweetkitty · 06/03/2007 22:38

When I watch DD2 toddling about at 13 months (she walked at 11 1/2 months that was bad enough) I often think it's a design flaw in that there's legs make them walk but their brains haven't caught up. Does that make sense? They just walk up and down because they can, fall over, bash into things, trip up etc

Personally I think they shouldn't walk until at least 18 months

6 months is early, but he does look very big- more like a 12 month old in size. A doctor friend said that the nerve pathways necessary to initiate walking are theoretically ready around 8 months- obviously some babies will be faster than that, others slower.

fwiw, my son was cruising from 5 months holding a finger- he never really lost the newborn walking reflex thing. He only walked unaided at 10 months though, which is on the lower end of normal. Both his sisters also walked at 10 months, but never cruised. Two of the three fell over all the bleddy time- my son's forehead is like a roadmap, even 12 years later. I used to dream of installing a padded cell in our house, just so I wouldn't have to watch him all the time. He even wore a bicycle helmet outdoors for a while, as hid head hit the ground every time he fell over. I had a friend whose baby walked at 8 months, and never fell over.

You can just never tell what babies are going to do. Some just find the whole thing scary, and need to wait until they feel confident, some prefer other means of locomotion.

my DS2 was standing at 6 months and crusing and climbing by 7 months - it was damn scary! (needless to say I didn't encourage him to walk unaided, no push along things for him! He managed it at just gone 11 months in the end)

Kelly1978 · 06/03/2007 23:55

my dd was relatively late to walk unaided too. Cruising early did her no favours at all really, I woud take her to mother and toddler group and all she would do is cruise round and round the exterior walls. All the others would sit there with their babies chewign rattles and chatting, while I had to chase her around the room boundaries.

nappyaddict · 06/03/2007 23:56

lol i started a thread about this yesterday!

nappyaddict · 07/03/2007 00:06

also just remembered that detentiongrrrls baby crawled at 3.5 months. wonder if he's walking yet?

midas · 07/03/2007 12:18

My first son walked at exactly 7 months, but didn't talk until he was 3 years old.
Second son didn't walk until 12/13 months but he started speaking quite early.
Don't know there is a link

belgo · 07/03/2007 12:21

midas - my experience is similar - my dd1 walked (actually ran) at 10 months, but now she is three, she is behind with talking.

dd2 walked at the age of one, and now she is 18 months, has a vocabulary of about 50 words.

I much prefer late walker early talker! Far less work!

belgo · 07/03/2007 12:22

As for crawling - sometimes it depends on the definition of crawling.

DD1 could shuffle around on her belly at about four months, but real crawling, she was about 6 and a half months.

My three have ranged between 8 and 9 and a half months and its so wearing. Once they realise they can do it, its all they want to do and none of them have had any concept of danger.

DD, the youngest, was like a moving target for DS2 who was 2 at the time. He would get her in his sights, charge and bowl her over!

becklespeckle · 07/03/2007 16:09

hmm, not sure about link between early walking/late talking - my early walker was also a very early talker - you could hold a conversation with him at 18 months. He still has no fear now tho - sure he was sent to turn me grey! DS1 however, nice average walker and talker - lovely!

Hulababy · 07/03/2007 16:42

Chocolate1000 - thier legs can definitely be strong enough; just all babies are different. You can't force a baby to stand and weight bear iif they don't want to.

I also don't see the early walking/late talking link. DD walked relatively early and also talked early.

However, I do agree with the paragraph near the bottom of the article. Early walkimg, etc. are no reflection of future ability or intelligence, etc. Just another example as how all children differ so much.
