any suggestions for what I can do to help my poor baby who's a week into weaning and has started getting really upset when filling her nappy?

she's only had fruit and veg so far, no concept of taking water from a cup, was excl BF until last week.

Maybe you're going a bit fast? Sounds like constipation? i only gave dd1, previously exclusively bfed, a tiny bit of baby rice once a day in the morning for about 2 or 3 weeks and then introduced apple, i think it was, she had that by itsef then mixed with rice once she'd got used to it. I always gave breast first then the solid - remember you're supplementing the breastmilk with solids not the other way round. I would slow way down if i were you and only introduce one new food a week, by itself, then mixed with one she already knows. I didnt use any jars of fruit or veg either, cooked my own from fresh. Good luck.

maybe i introduced the apple after 10 days to a week, can't remember...

massagemum · 06/03/2007 13:40

How old is she?? Try to take it slowly and what about giving water from a bottle??

tassis · 06/03/2007 13:41

thanks, malaleche

all fresh here too and not reducing BFs yet

i think one new food a week is a bit slow given she's 6 months, but you could be right, maybe giving her a bit much too soon...

6 months seems a bit late to introduce a bottle...

My dd2 did this as well. Looking back, i think it was just the very unfamiliar sensation that was upsetting her. She stopped screaming after the first few days and we've had no problems since.

tassis · 06/03/2007 13:45

Lucy that's very encouraging, I hope you're right!

i used a small Avent bottle with the bendy sippy bit, not a teat i mean. I think the white ones are for little babies then the green one when they're older. I wouldnt bother giving her water till it gets hot tho - breast should be enough, shouldnt it?

tassis · 06/03/2007 14:01

good reminder mal, I had those bottle tops with ds, will have a look

i agree breast should be enough for now...

dont want to alarm you, but it sounds like it could be an anal fissure...they are really common in babies, especially during weaning. it means it might be very painful to poo: maybe check it out.
i have one, since childbirth, and they really are horrible, and from my research i know they are fairly frequent for little uns.

tassis · 06/03/2007 14:28

tell me more MaeBee, how do i check it out?

Hmmm IMHO I thought anal fissures whilst common in infants are usually associated with constipation ,especially in FF babies or babies further into weaning (she's only been on presumabley small amts for 1 week). Anal fissures can often be seen...is there a small tear visible on v gentle examination? Sometimes you get bleeding with a tear...has there been any bleeding?..I would think aslong as she's not constipated then more likely it's related to the change from purely BF diet to mixed diet.

We couldn't get DS to have any water at the beginning from a cup or bottle....we then got a baby medicine syringe (with no needle obv!!!)and used to feed him water with that?

hairycaterpillar · 06/03/2007 15:33

...oh also an anal fissure would be v tender so she would be sore when you wipe her anal area.

See if it settles over the next few days, and if not maybe you know a friendly GP who could check for you if you want some more reassurance/advice.

thanks everyone

hoping it's just a phase
