My ds is 2 1/2 and just put him in pants today for first time I dont really want to use a potty and my dd didnt use one at all but he gets upset when i put him on the toilet even with a toddler seat - should i persevere? also is it best to teach them to stand up or sit down to wee?! could get a step but he is a bit little really.... he starts pre school in a couple of weeks so really need to make a start on this! thanks in advance for any help!

Hi cleaninglady

We toilet trained DS2 about 2/3 weeks ago. He is a big lad and hated the potty (couldn't get his penis to point downwards without a contortion), so we got him a step and potty seat. He stands for wees and within a week got to grips with asking for the toilet so we didn't have to take him on the hour. He is not a fan of the toddler seat so we offered to read a story to him when he uses it and it has worked well.

He had one day with accidents and since then we've had only one poo accident (he was in the car).

My tip would be to allow him to stand to wee and if he hates the toddler seat, don't try and force him. Rather let him use the potty.

Oh DS2 was 29 months when we started.

No tips - my DS is nearly 2 and likes the toilet but not the potty (still wearing nappies). So I'll watch this with interest...

just tried to get him to stand on step and "point" into toilet which didnt go down well so will keep sitting him on the toddler seat on it and wait and see !!! good tip about reading to him whilst hes sat there it might distract him .......

I just used to sit DS on the potty (he wasn't keen on the toilet, and definately prefers to wee sitting down)every 1hr, then every 2hrs for a few days then gradually cut back. It was ages before he would ask for the potty we had to spot when his legs started jiggling. But you get there in the end.

Both my ds and my dd were toilet trained at 22 months. Ds took 2 days and had no accidents afterwards; dd took a week and had very occasional accidents for about a year. I can take no credit as the childminder did all the work, but I can tell you how she did it.
She put them on the toilet (no potty, no reducer seat), and had them balance on it using their hand to hold onto the sides. She kept them in their underwear all day and put them on the toilet every 20 minutes. Eventually they figured out what the sensation of needing to wee and weeing felt like. We waited close to 6 months with both of them before putting them to bed without a pullup nappy. Both had dry nappies for weeks and weeks before we eliminated them at night. However during the day you really do need to keep the nappies off when you are doing the toilet training. However, we did bring a nappy along if we thought we were going to be out somewhere when we might not have access to a toilet as quickly as they might need it. If you can't get to a toilet, friend taught me the trick of not putting on the nappy unless they expressed a need to wee and then just putting it on to wee in and then taking it off again.

If he's little probably best to let him wee sitting down. When he's ready to stand up, get him to stand on a step and lean all the way forward so that he can place his left hand on the back of the toilet seat (right hand for aiming!). That way he's more likely to be pointing down into the toilet!

thanks everyone - tried toilet seat again this morning and no where near as nervous so he is running around in thomas the tank engine underpants and im waiting to see what happens! dd was much easier than this ! none of the hassle with sit or stand etc

Hope you've got lots - thomas the tank pants that is!

Try and make it fun - "lets try to keep thomas dry"! Be pepared for lots of wet pants the first few days though. Also, it's a great time for a bit of father/son bonding.

Good Luck!

I have read this with interest, as I am thinking of toilet training my dts, who are 2.4. I have to have done this by April 24th, as the nursery stipulates it.
I remember having problems with ds1, and again there was this dead line looming then. It doesn't help, does it?
I did a mixture with ds1, but think I will start off on the potties, and then do the toilet seat thing with them in the evenings at first. I got ds1 to sit down first, but very quickly the nursery had him doing it standing up. I really wouldn't worry about that so much.
I agree with just putting them in pants, but that was easy to do, as with ds1 it was over the Summer, less clothes, and out in the garden a lot.
Still, am going to go for it soon..........or may be not

Don't have any tips cleaninglady but will be watching with interest!

I'm going to bite the bullet with dd and get her into pants this weekend. She's 2.7 and I've been putting it off, to be honest.

Obv to stand or not to stand isn't an issue! However we don't have a potty and I'm not intending getting one - she sits on the trainer seat on the toilet quite well (we did use distraction/reading stories/giving sweets as an incentive to get her used to it at first).

I've stocked up on loads of pants and some extra trousers and we're planning a quiet weekend...
