How many words are expected by 16 months?

as far as I know not a lot. What is much more important at that age is understanding language (being able to follow simple instructions) and communication. If your DC does not talk, are they communicating otherwise? E.g. pointing, shaking head/nodding etc.

It's a huge range. I can't remember exactly but it's written somewhere in the red book.

tessiebear4 · 03/03/2017 17:31

Yes, pointing, playing games, waving etc but very few actual words

Ds1 got his first word at 17 months. That's late, but not concerning late iyswim. I really wouldn't worry.

My son is 14 months in a few days and has no words at all yet. I must admit I'm getting a bit worried. We do have mu mu mu and da da da which are sometimes in context. How many words does you little one have OP?

BackforGood · 03/03/2017 18:42

It is hugely varied, and develops massively between 18 months and 2 yrs.

Have a look at the Talking Point website, here. Smile

4 or 5 words and a consistent grunt and nod for yes

My 16 month old has no words! She understands loads though and points and waves etc so I'm not worried. She also babbles constantly.

It varies for all children. It helps if you talk a lot around them. Even just describing what you're doing etc. It can depend on how much influence they get from others around them. Di they go to nursery? Or spend time with older relatives and adults? It will all come when they're ready. I wouldn't worry too much yet.

What they used to look for is 6-18 appropriate sounds (so could be mmm for a car, baaa for a sheep) at 18 months. So he's well on track for that.
