Is this common for 5 year olds, my children arent this age yet so I dont know whats to come, but its a really sad to hear, her Mum is really upset, she has obviously brought it home from school, Im guessing she has no idea what it means and probably neither does her 7 year old sister. Obviously you cant stop them from picking up bad language from school but does anyone have any advice on how to avoid them repeating it at home.

Hi pepsi, I haven't heard this from the 5 yos I know but I would deal with it by being very low key and explaining that it's not a nice word and we don't use it. And then I'd leave it. If it comes up again say 'no thanks, we don't want to hear that' and move on. The more attention you give it IMO, the more interesting a word it is to use in 5 yo eyes and the more likely you are to have it verbally hurled at you in years to come. Dp conducted an interesting experiment in the car the other day - he told ds (6.5yo) that a random made up word (I can't even remember it now) was a rude word and never to be used. Within 5 minutes ds was bandying it around to see what we did about it, whilst giving me sideways glances because he suspected I'd tell him the truth if he asked and admit that it wasn't really a rude word. Interesting though! That's my advice anyway!

Btw, not wanting to give the impression that all the 5yos I know are saints! My son knows some very rude words indeed.

I agree with WWW. Play it down as they will pick up on panic
