Are all 5 yr old girls bossy little madams, or do I have a problem?

Just spent the afternoon playing with dd, or rather being ordered about by her!

"No, don't do that, I told you to do this!"

"Mummy we are going to play with the Barbies now, put the ball down"

" Come on, Mummy, haven't you finished yet?"

Do you think she has got it from me?

Seriously though, if they're all the same, I won't mind, but I don't want her to become friendless due to her attitude!

sounds normal especially if she is in reception class..........

TenaLady · 24/02/2007 17:53

No consulation but my ds(5) is the same!

RustyBear · 24/02/2007 17:53

Absolutely normal from what I remember of DD at that age ....

tissy · 24/02/2007 17:56

yes, she's in reception (or P1 as they call it North of the border)

DD is almost 5 and is exactly like that

She said outraged the other day "Mummy, someone said I was bossy at school today".

sunnysideup · 24/02/2007 18:26

well, spooky you should say that It's the MAIN thing I've noticed about the girls in ds' reception class, my GOD but they are bossy....we can be getting on with putting his coat on the hook or some such thing and you can guarantee that one or other of the girls will bustle up and tell you where to put stuff/what's allowed/not allowed/who has just done something a bit naughty.......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. One or two of them are simply insufferable. The boys have their own 'isssshoooos' but being like this does not seem to factor, it's definitely a girl thing.

Having said that, my neice was UNbearable at this age, but she did grow out of it pretty quickly, she's six and a half now and much more socially aware.

However it's a bloomin good thing we women are bossy, nothing would get done in this life otherwise

I took DD (4 in April) away for a couple of days this month, and one evening ordered a well-deserved large glass of wine with my meal. She fixed me with a glare, and said "Mummy, you're not going to drink ALL of that, are you?"

Other classics include:
"You haven't eaten enough dinner so don't think you're getting pudding"

"If I say no it means no"

I'm sure a parrot would have been cheaper...

If girls that age weren't bossy, they wouldn't have invented Bella in the Tweenies

DH often says' pity the poor bloke who has to marry DD, hell be nagged to death'

Hulababy · 25/02/2007 11:03

Almost all the 4/5 year old girls we know, DD included, have a bossy streak which seems very prevalent right now!

Moomin · 25/02/2007 11:10

My dd is 5 and exactly the same. Constantly being told how to play a game, how to talk and what to say when pretending, how to dance and which music. It's driving dh mad! Me, not so much because she's just a mini-me and I can remember wanting everything exactly my way when I was that age... my poor younger brother...

Dh made the fatal mistake of sticking to his guns and refusing to be bossed about on a very trivial matter the other day and she was outraged. Eventually she said 'if you don't do it my way, Daddy, you're not allowed to come to my wedding.... and when I have a house you're not allowed to come round.' !!!!!! Little madam - dh said 'Good, I won't be contributing to either then. I look forward to some peace and quiet.'

Earlybird · 25/02/2007 11:19

DD (just turned 6), is the same.

How do you find the bossiness plays out when they're with other (equally bossy) children? Is it resolved, and if so, how? Or does it often end in tears?

malaleche · 25/02/2007 11:21

Haven't read thread but as far as i can see little girls copy their mothers....so if yours is a bossy little madam.....mine bitches at her father, and shouts instead of discussing things calmly and reasonably we reap what we sow im afraid... I think girls tend to be the organisers and teller-what-to-doers of the world too
