2.4 year old DS just started stammering overnight

DS1 has just stared stammering at the beginning of words and sentences. Not every time but certain words he was saying before (again being a common one) he's now struggling to get out.
He started saying sentences (basic ones) over the last month or so and still developing his speech but it's coming on leaps and bounds.
DH really worried as he had a stammer at school and it really affected his confidence.
Any thoughts?

Totally normal and usually represents a developmental leap - brain is ahead of the mouths ability to get the words out!

Just make sure to give him all the time he needs to get things out and not put any pressure on him.

Will almost certainly resolve.

Both of my boys have done this (and interestingly neither of my girls). It's to do with different parts of the brain working at different speeds.

Say he sees a spider web and he starts telling you: "L... l... l.. l.. look...". His brain has registered what he's seen, knows what it is. He's remembered the word for spider and is just trying to remember the trickier word "web". While his brain is thinking, he stalls on the first word. Then he'll remember the word and finish the sentence: "L... l... l.. l.. look a spider web".

My eldest son used to do this on all the question words. Most question words start with W (what where when why which) so we worried it was a specific problem with W. But it was just that question words are often the first word in sentences that introduce new or unfamiliar language to the child. The fact it's a question means that it is an unfamiliar topic to the child.

My ds started doing this at about the same age. It lasted a few weeks. We didn't rush him or step in to say the word for him, we just waited for it to pass.

He's now 20 and the stammer never returned. Hopefully it will be a similar story for your ds.

Mine have all done this around that age.

Just ignore it, don't prompt them, and I bet it'll go away.

My son did this too. I was worried but he is 4 now and no sign of a stammer x

Dss did this, I honestly can't remember how long it lasted, but he's a teen now and no sign of it at all, so not necessarily a long term thing.
