frantic sleep kicking - is this normal?

Feel a bit silly asking this, but as a first time mum i'm slightly worried by the frantic kicking my DS (6mths) does whilst asleep. He lifts both his legs up in the air (in his sleeping bag - it's really quite a sight) and smacks them back down on the mattress 3 or 4 times in quick succession. He can do this for ages, last night it was practically non-stop for 45 mins. He's obviously asleep, he doesn't grumble or cry whilst doing it and he wakes up quite happy - but is it normal or anything to worry about?

I think I may be worrying unnecessarily - nothing new there! - but had anyone had any similar experiences?

my dd used to that too when she was a similar age. I just used to find it annoying when I was trying to get to sleep myself, but she soon stopped doing it, and didn't come to any harm.

Ms ds also used to do this, although he might've been a little bit older than your ds at the time. I always thought he was trying desperately to kick the covers off! But it was exactly as you described, lifting both legs up and hitting the mattress several times in a row.

I don't remember it going on for as long as 45 minutes, but I definitely remember him doing it.

Er, my 2yo still does it!

My 6.5 mths ds does this regularly every night whilst asleep, never awake. He brings his legs down so hard that even when dp and I are downstairs, we can normally hear the thudding. I did wonder at first whether he was trying to 'stretch out' his legs a bit against the constraints of the sleeping bag but he's still being doing it when sleeping without his bag (due to the warm weather.) Because he does it so rhythmically, I now wonder whether its some kind of self-soothing mechanism as my ds only seems to do it when he appears to be in the lighter stages of sleep. Didn't realise that other lo's also did it - always thought it was something just ds did. Makes me wonder if it does have some kind of 'function' then? Who knows!!

my ds has always done this, when i get him out of his bath, he does it loads, with a big smile, as if saying, i know it's bed time and i'm really happy about it! i worried about it at first, but now just think it's a sign of enthusiasm!
