11 month not talking

Hi I hope someone can reassure me, my lo is 1 in 19 days and as it's Christmas then we had her birthday party early.
Friends came with babies slightly older and younger that her and most said she was late talking? Apparently all there lo's could say 3 or 4 words including a six month old that can say mamma, dada baby and bye bye. Is she really late, I had not worried about this before, she spends most of the day babbling, she knows what I'm saying like if I tell her to get her ball. A friend even suggested it was because she can do some baby sign language that I taught her so she doesn't need to talk but to be honest she does about 10 signs and there all for animals or other things like trees not really for things she wants or needs. I'm really worried now, I'm a first time mum and I know each child develops at there own pace but I didn't think she was behind. Sorry for the long post.

My 22 month old barely talks. Don't worry about it!
DD 1 spoke at 13 months I think, but very basic.

Cosmicglitterpug · 10/12/2016 23:01

If they know what you're saying it's fine. Check with the HV if you're worried but I wouldn't worry at 11 months.

Myusernameisalreadyinuse · 10/12/2016 23:03

Lots of babies aren't talking at that age. Don't let other people worry you. I know a nearly two year old who only said a couple of words until recently and suddenly she's picked up loads. They all get there at their own pace.

idontlikealdi · 10/12/2016 23:11

Walking at 1 talking at 2...

GrubbyWindows · 10/12/2016 23:12

The health visitor look for first words by 18 months, my DS had none until at least 19ms, and was talking his head off by two. They each take their own time!
Thant 6month old has parents with wishful hearing...

Orangebird69 · 10/12/2016 23:12

My ds is 14mo. He says ta. And yes. Sometimes. It's fine!

Mrscog · 10/12/2016 23:13

Definitely don't worry at 1. Completely normal to not have words yet, I think you generally expect a few by 18 months.

Soubriquet · 10/12/2016 23:13

Honestly your little boy is just fine

More likely your friends are exaggerating

SausageSoda · 10/12/2016 23:15

That 6 month old is just making sounds, not talking. If I wanted to kid myself I could say that my 5 month old said 'dada' last week but it was just babble with one bit of babble that happened to sound like it Grin

Not a lot of 11 months talk - your DC certainly isn't behind in their development for not being able to do so at that age. Please stop comparing to others - that way madness lies.

LovingLola · 10/12/2016 23:16

My ds had about 6 words until he was 2 1/2 years old. He understood everything we said but for some reason just would not use words. Suddenly at 30 months the floodgates opened and he spoke in sentences from that day onwards. Fully fluent and articulate. And was reading the first Harry Potter book when he was 5 years old!
However I would say that if you have concerns about his hearing or about his passive vocabulary (what he understands of what you say to him) then definitely keep an eye on him.

InTheKitchenAtParties · 10/12/2016 23:17

My DD just turned 1. She babbles. She doesn't say any actual words. I'm not worried yet. And I've never heard of a 6 month old talking! Did you actually see it for yourself?

tappitytaptap · 11/12/2016 18:36

Some of my antenatal class thought their babies talked at a similar age. It was just babbling...bababa mamamam hayayaya etc. I soon realised people like to exaggerate what their babies do....

BendingSpoons · 11/12/2016 18:41

I'm a Speech and Language Therapist. Very few 11 month olds are talking, 6 month olds definitely aren't! As a PP said, they will be making sounds similar to words but not using them with intent. At 11mo babbling and understanding some words is totally on track. As long as words come by 18 months that's fine.

BendingSpoons · 11/12/2016 18:43

Oh and the signing will HELP talking, in that she may sign before she can say words. It DEFINITELY won't stop her talking. Once she knows the word she will use it but there is no hurry.

Enidblyton1 · 11/12/2016 18:45

Don't worry, very few 11 months old say anything.
My eldest hardly uttered a word until she was nearly 2. I know others who were later than that. They are all highly articulate 5 year olds now...

GiddyOnZackHunt · 11/12/2016 18:46

Bending It is possible for a 6 month old to talk properly using words that aren't babble. And are used in context and on demand. Unusual but it does happen.
