DS is 17 months on the 17th. We are temporarily living abroad and it costs a small fortune to see a pediatrician for a development check so I won't be doing this until we return in Feb and can see the HV!
So, when my daughter was this age she had 40-50 words and was very verbal. DS definitely understands what is being asked and can follow instructions, and he is able to point to body parts when he's asked, or go and get an object, ball for example.
His only words however are:
all gone (he doesn't pronounce the 'n' sound)
Uh-oh
Oh-no
Dada
Car
Cracker (sounds like car-car)
Aeroplane (sounds like airplair)
He says 'mama' if I say it first.

Is this within the normal range? He doesn't seem to pronounce the words properly as outlined above.

I spoke to the hv equivalent yesterday. She said boys are generally much slower verbally. They would expect about 50 words at 2 years, and they should at that stage be starting to make 2 word sentences. Not sure if that helps at all!

Sounds more than enough to me. Mine had her first words at 18 months then it was only about 5 for a few months and she was fine

My DD is 16 months and has:
Mama
Daddy
Doggy
'Dirdy' (birdy)
Uh oh
Oh dear
She also makes a raspberry sound for bee which has extended to all insects (I think it's her attempt at a 'buzz' sound!)

Thats it, so similar to your son. I think your daughter having 40-50 words at this stage is very impressive! In my experience of other friends children of the same age, it is your son who is the norm.

MoonriseKingdom · 11/12/2016 13:38

I think your DD was advanced. Your DS vocabulary sounds very similar to my DDs at that age. A few months later her speech took off and at 2yrs 2 months she is a total chatterbox.

My son had about five words at 2. He wouldnt stop talking (in sentences) by 26mo.
I think your ds is well within normal and your dd was a noticeably early talker.
Were they similar physically? My ds had really good early fine and gross motor control.

Thank you for your reassurances and examples, I feel confident that he's in the normal range for sure.
Actually, he was a bit slow physically! He didn't move at all till 11 months when he bum shuffled, pulled up at 12 months, crawled at 13 months then walked at 14 months. DD crawled at 7 months and walked at 10 months, I know she was particularly quick on this account too. His fine motor skills have always been pretty good.

Agree that DD was likely advanced, and he is more 'normal' but as I only have her to compare to it's so hard to know whether what he is doing is on track, especially without a HV type service.

By 27 months they need to have 50 words that's the milestones for health check my son had. He is 27 months now and can speak in sentences no problem
At 16-17 months he only had the odd word. His speech has taken off in last 2 months from a few words to being able to hold a conversation

HoorayForFishAndChips · 14/12/2016 12:50

My little boy didn't speak much until he was about 20 months, then suddenly he started...until then his only words were 'Peepo' (from the kids' book), and he would say 'da' if he wanted you to tell
him what something was. And 'no'.

Then he suddenly took off - words like car, train, cat, mummy, daddy, banana. Now people comment how good his speech is. I did worry at the time though, I'd heard toddlers younger than him say much more.

My DS is almost exactly the same age as yours and has fewer words, he can say Mama but he calls everybody that, and can do some animal sounds. he can also say Hiya, Cheese (he's his mother's son alright) and Uh-Oh and that's about it. I'm not worried, in fact, I'm pretty pleased with how he's getting on, as are his nursery.

He does understand WAY more than he can speak though and i'm constantly surprised by how he can follow instructions, so i think the words won't be too far behind.

Don't worry, they all get there at their own pace. My DS still can barely walk as well but I just try to tell myself not to compare him to others too much.
