two 6 yr old best friend boys now no longer very nice to each other...advice

They've known each other since nursery and after a very close reception year at same school where they were inseparable and great together, they're not getting on very well at all. When I have friend over, they're not very positive to each other and no longer excited to see each other.

It's really hard not to intervene; the friend has got more friends at school and although I encourage my DS to spread his wings, I worry that he isn't. and he can be difficult..

Is this normal 6 yr old behaviour...? Any advice - I find the whole friendship thing a real worry

Yes this is completely normal! My DS1 had a 'best friend' from age 3 to age 6 and they got on really well. Then they drifted apart, had less in common and made other friends. DS2 on the other hand is 7, and has never had a best friend - he plays with lots of different people. And DD is 9 and still has the same best friend she's had since nursery. All normal I think!

Maybe a good idea to invite a couple of different boys over to play to help your DS make other friends.

Thanks, yes I have done that.

Tonight he told me that a few of the boys are mean to him. as if a gang is forming that he's not in...

so hard to know how involved to get...

Ok, that doesn't sound good. In that case I would have a quiet word with his teacher. Tell her what he has said and ask her to keep an eye on him socially.
