DS2 7months and still won't roll over

Hello, DS2 is a joy, nearly always happy, sleeps well and very alert however he won't roll over. He can just about roll when he has both feet in his hands then I think its just the momentum that carries him over but he isn't interested in doing it himself iyswim? I put toys just out of reach but he'll just give up trying to get them or he'll start growling at them. He is only just sitting up as well, still a bit wobbily so definately no leaving him without support. Is all this normal? DS1 was rolling and sitting at 6months and by 8mths he'd pulled himlself up to standing in his cot. I can't see DS2 doing this. I think the reason I'm worried is that HV said she "would like ti if he was rolling over" and that was a at 6mths. I haven't dared go back in case she tells me something is wrong with DS2 and I'm sure he's ok. Your reassurance would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

My DS is 8 months, I should think I've witnessed him roll about 5 times, most of which have been "by accident". He's just not bothered and he's quite normal just not super-motivated to move (lazy!), so please don't worry, they all do things in different orders and skip some things all together.

wellsie · 06/02/2007 14:47

Hi Weegle, yes lazy comes to mind!! I did wonder if he might miss the rolling over bit, trouble is it's hard not to compare him with DS1. Glad to hear that he's not the only one anyway. Thanks

My DD only rolled over at 9 months. She absolutely hated being on her tummy and just resisted all attempts to end up in that position. Suddenly she did it, started crawling at 10 months, walking at 14 and now at nearly two, she is running everywhere like a mad thing.
Think these HV's put the fear of God into you if your child doesn't fit onto their milestone chart.
I would relax for a while and try not to compare your second child to your first, there are such differences in the speed at which children reach milestones.

lulumama · 06/02/2007 19:20

neither of mine rolled until 11 months...they are fine now ! just didn;t want to move !

funnypeculiar · 06/02/2007 19:24

dd has rolled twice (she's 11 mths), first time at about 5 mths - she looked at me as if to say 'what was the point of that' and tried once again before dismissing the exercise as pointless. DS did exactly the same. Neither of them have been early with physical milestones, to be fair- both from the school of 'I have someone to walk FOR me, thank you...' but both fine (I think )

Thanks for these replies, am definately going to chill out about it now. Hes a happy bunny just lazy

Neither of mine have done it before 9 months, DD now 3 is fine nothing wrong with her, she crawled at 10 months walk at 14 months (oooh just like jambot's dd)
DS 9 months now only started a few weeks ago just around the9 months mark and now he is speedy can cover a room in a few moves lol.

HV should learn to eep their thoughts to themselves sometimes they are supposed to know better than anyone that all babies do these things differently.

fizzbuzz · 06/02/2007 20:10

My ds is 7 months old and has rolled once about 4 weeks ago.

Since then has shown no interest at all despite being tempted by toys etc. I think she is just lazy

When I spoke to hv she said if when she was on her stomach, she held up her head and supported her self with her arms (which she does) she was alright. Dd hates hates being on her stomach.

I whitter as well, but she can get herself about by squirming rather than rolling

Tortington · 06/02/2007 20:21

have you tried it on a hill

admylin · 06/02/2007 20:22

My ds was not able to roll over at 8 months, at 9 months he started to roll over but then at 10 months he was walking so I wouldn't worry too much as everything goes so quickly at that age.

Troutpout · 06/02/2007 20:37

Neither of my 2 ever rolled over willfully..only by accident
Both hated being on their tummies too.
both crawled at 10 months and walked before their first birthdays... so i concluded that it didn't seem to be a marker for anything.

Troutpout · 06/02/2007 20:38

Custy pmsl
had visions of mothers hurling their babies down hills
Roll dammit!

Tortington · 06/02/2007 20:58

or my dh suggests fattening the baby up on pork pies then try

worleythewisp · 06/02/2007 21:00

my ds2 is 7 months and also doesnt roll over, he hates being on his front and screams when i put on his belly on the play mat. its hard not to compare him to ds1 as he was early for everything, rolling over, sitting and walking by 11 months.

i think ds2 is just being lazy as he can sort of sit unaided for a while, until he leans for something and he toppples over.

things will be ok though!!

Biglips · 06/02/2007 21:03

my dd who is now 2.4 yrs old only ever rolled over once when she was 5m old

chocolateshoes · 06/02/2007 21:07

My DS hardly ever rolled over. In fact he only recently realised it was a possiblity when he was about 14mths and then kept doing it while I was trying to change his nappy! He was however walking at 11 mths. They all do different stuff at different stages. Try not to worry!(hmmm like I follow that advice!)

Aderyneryn · 06/02/2007 21:09

My dd2 is 16months and I have no idea when she first rolled over because she sat up and bottom-shuffled and crawled before she ever rolled over. She does it now, obviously, but she wasn't very interested in moving about at an early age.

Olihan · 06/02/2007 21:13

Ds1 rolled at 20 weeks but didn't crawl until 9 months or walk until 13 months. OTOH, Dd never rolled but crawled at 8 months and walked at 10 months so not rolling doesn't count for anything.Don't worry, make the most of being able to put him down knowing he'll be in the same place when you get back .

Custy - think you should check with your HV before doing that .

Fleecy · 07/02/2007 17:14

I have a 4.5 month old dd (who has never rolled over) and I'm constantly asking my mum how old i was when I did stuff so I can compare her development to mine. Sad I know!

Apparently I never did learn to roll over (well, obv did at some point as I can do it now but you know what I mean!) but crawled quite early.

My sis rolled all over the place but never crawled - bottom shuffling then straight to walking.

And we both turned out fine - i think!
