Stretching feeds (and a rant about my mum)

DS is 4 weeks old and formula fed. Was 3.2kg at birth, now 4.1.

At 2 weeks he was feeding during the day every 3.5 - 4 hours and waking up once a night.

He then hit a growth spurt at 2.5 weeks, and has 4oz every 2-2.5 hours during the day and wakes up 2-3 times per night.

How long does this last, and how can I stretch the intervals (esp. at night!) without starving my baby. I don't want to ram in more food than his little tummy can handle.

My mother has offered such useful (unsolicited) advice as "are you sure you're making the formula up right" and that i shouldn't read baby books, which is not helping!

Any USEFUL advice please?

What is the total amount of milk in ounces he is having in 24 hours?

There is a formula based on a baby's weight which is a guideline to to how much formula milk a baby should be getting.

I don't know what it is but I am sure somebody will be along shortly to tell you.

I think he is doing very well. The only thing I can think of is to offer a clean finger tip or dummy to suck on and see if that settles him (both of mine were very sucky and would have eaten for England if not offered an alternative, even if they weren't hungry).

i wouldn't be trying to stretch the intervals. he's only 4 weeks old.

Go with what the baby wants - it will most likely all change again soon. Keep the night feeds dark, quiet and uneventful as possible and the day feeds more fun - this seemed to help settle my ds back more quickly after a night feed.

And I hate to say it but I agree with your mum about the baby books - they are useless IMO!

Both my sons hardly ever went 4 hours between feeds. If your ds drains his bottle at most feeds just put an extra ounce in.

When ds1 was born an auxillary nurse said to me your son had some milk an hour ago he can't be hungry again he's trying it on!
He was less than 24hrs old fgs!

i think it can take a while for some babies to get into a routine, but go with him and what he wants, dont try to force him or change his feeding times, and it wont be long till youre both happy and settled x x x
