Should DS have said this yet? DH is a sweetie and always tells me DS is fantastic and not to worry... part of me knows he's right but part of me is worrying. HV said if he hasn't said anything by a year she will refer him... this sounds a bit scary to me...surely we all learn at diff rates? anyone else have the same? I talk with him all the time and we look at books... would be interested to hear from others.

Feel better myself now after reading this. Had a visit from community nurse yesterday for a 2 year check up. Ds doesn't put words together yet, he says single words - like bus, car, muma, dada, three, six etc. He kind of makes up his own words for things too. Like 'da' is ball at the moment.

I have been fairly concerned, but not too much. The nurse is going to make another visit in 3 months to check on his progress - dejags you have given me some hope!

Mumeroo, I don't think ds was saying anything at 10m, just lots of babbling!

auntymandy · 31/01/2007 14:26

Ds has his own language too. Its quite clever really.
We just talk to him loads and use 'peoper' words back to him!
Lots of people in the house talking so maybe he doesnt feel the need!!!

DS is 16 months and the only thing I think is a recognisable "word" is chocchoc. Man after my own heart
Sometimes he maybe says "down" or "jump" but no way recognisable to anyone else but me and DH.
Defintiely not mama.

americantrish · 31/01/2007 16:04

ds didnt say mama clearly until he was about 25 months old!

americantrish · 31/01/2007 16:04

ps: wanted to add, love your name, pooka. i had a ferret named pooka once!

pooka · 31/01/2007 18:18

Well I suppose it's better than a guinea pig!

belgianmama · 31/01/2007 18:25

Both mine didn't say mama for aaaggggeeeessss. First they learnt to say a whole number of other things and then by 18m or even more come to think of it, they thought they would please me and say mama. Now they're 3 & 5 and I'm hearing that word far to often!

NannyL · 31/01/2007 18:29

my naeraly 17 month old has not said mama or dad yet

he does say my name though even when im not there!

he also says quite a few other words, i guess about 30 or so words now, but not mama or dada

americantrish · 01/02/2007 10:24

pooka> IMO, ferrets are far cooler than guinea pigs ;)

blimey that's a lot of chat! And brilliant to hear! my instinct has been DS is fine but having HV say that and also having some other mums saying blah-di-blah my DS/DD is saying Mamma Dadda etc made me get a wee bit angsty...(sensible head tells me not to listen/compare - other head foolishly does) he is definitely trying to talk and charming it is too! Feeling a bit silly but thought I'd MNet it and get it out of my system and all your comments have made me feel a hell of a lot better. Thank you. Yep, I have a feeling Mamma isn't going to be his first word. Much more likely to be something completely unexpected... fantastic. How it should be!

Had same thing with DS. He is about to be one and says mamamamamaammaaa ALL the time now, but didn't until about 6 weeks or so ago. HV also said to reassess him at 12 months if no mama or dada or baba. If your DS is saying "ba" sounds I dont think you have anything to worry about. Sorry not read all replies so am prob repeating others .

Tutter · 08/02/2007 13:54

arf

my 20mo says precisely nowt

boompi · 09/02/2007 14:33

DD could only say 'Duck' by her birthday. At 17months its probably over 50 words. Of course they dont include mama or mummy!
