I'm worried that my 5 year old DD is turning into a geek.

She's always had a love of learning and is in her element when her head is in a book, which is obviously great, but I feel it's gone a bit too far. I took her, her sister (also 5) and some friends to the park today and whilst the other kids ran around laughing and playing like 5 year olds do, DD sat on the bench with her junior encyclopaedia (which she had insisted on taking) and didn't join in at all.

Before anyone jumps on me thinking this is a boasting mummy thread, it really isn't. I'm cocnerned she's missing out on the social stuff of being 5. She doesn't seem to have that many friends at school, seems to play on her own a lot and although I want to encourage the studious side of her which she obviously enjoys, I also want her to enjoy playing and being 5. Advice very weclome please.

My DS is 5. He will sit with his head in a book for hours. Nature books, whales and dolphins, dinosaurs, space. He loves watching Planet Earth and Blue Planet. This is the age they are finding out what THEY are interested in rather than us telling them what is fun. Go with it, I think, and don't worry, she's having fun her way.

Ds, also 5, is a bit of a geek. But then I was, and his father too, so I guess it'snot unexpected.

I had (have) the same concerns as you, but it is how he is. I invite other children round to play, and encourage him to go to football club (although he is really bad at football), but I think he is pretty happy as he is.

Being a "Geek" is soooo "in", its cool.

Perhaps she is a trend setter.

sorry too much coffee!!!!

That is just who she is.
You should be very proud

I was very "bookish" at her age. My nose was always buried in a book and I didn't want to play alot. By the time I was in High school I was very sociable, I wouldn't worry about it. If she doesn't grow out of it, its surely not the worst thing ever. She just might be a little diffrent, maybe having her nose buried is her idea of fun. Nothing wrong with that. I would also refrain from using the word geek. It somehow implies that there is something wrong with being smart.

As a geek, married to a geek I would agree with the other posters, she is having fun in her own way.

I'm sure othetr mums must think I'm a bit odd with the way he behaves sometimes - it's not me - just him (and DH who is a bit like that as well )
