Speech in 2.9yo ds

Ds says quite a lot, which dh and I can understand (and a lot which still sounds a little babble-y)

However, preschool say they can't understand much of what he says, and listening to him I can kind of see why, I'm not sure if it's a lisp, or almost his own language, but I can see why. But at the playgroup today, I noticed a friends 2.2yo talks a lot clearer. He has less words, or at least less words than I understand in my own ds, but very clear.

And a friends dd who is 2 months younger than ds (and previously has just squeaked as opposed to talk!) is also saying a lot, and very clear.

Is there anything I should or can do or should I leave it?

Hi Lunavix. We had the same worries with ds and the health visitor came to see us 6 months after the normal developmental check to see if he had improved. He had so they signed him off. It might be worth getting them to check it as they might want to refer him to a speech therapist

My dd (2.11) is similar. She has just been assessed by the SALT for lack of clarity. She listened to her, and decided she could make most of the sounds in 'connected speech', but doesn't put them at the beginning of words. She is on the waiting list for SALT, but probably won't need it apparently. I was given some tips on what to do with her, and htey've already made a difference. We have had quite a lot of dealings with our HV over dd's speech as she didn't start talking at all until about 2.5. SO has actually come a long way in the last few months. I would ask for a SALT referral if I were you. It can take a while for things to happen, so ask now, and get ont he waiting list just in case.
