ok, so thought I'd start gently giving him a few expressed feeds, but he seemed to really hate it! Just the unfamiliarity of the bottle..

anyone have any tips on getting the baby to take the bottle? In the end he had about 2 oz by me putting my fingers round the bottle to simulate flesh, and holding him very close..

or is it just because it's from me, might he take it from DH?

help! don't know what I'll do it he can't take it!

Hi - sympathies, it's a horrible feeling isn't it worrying about leaving your baby, my 6 month old lo has just started nursery.

Don't panic though, I think a lot of babies don't take to it straight away, it's often just a question of being persistent and maybe trying different teats. My DD refused the first few times she was offered the bottle. You could try:

  • getting someone else to give the bottle
  • different teats, I found that Tommy Tippee Closer to Nature teats were more successful than the original Avent ones I tried, Nuk are also supposed to be good
  • don't get upset and push it at an individual session, keep the amounts small and just try again a day or so later
  • putting something else in the bottle to get them used to it, my DD loves Gripe Water watered down 3:1 with cooled boiled water (3 parts water to 1 dose Gripe Water)
  • if all else fails you can try feeding by cup / spoon, but it probably will work before then

good luck

thanks!

he woke up from his nap and reluctantly drank the rest (willing to drink it as long as I hold it at a weird angle RIGHT next to my breast so he can feel the breast)...

definitely will need to practise every day so it's not too much of a shock to him though.. the nanny will feed him and she will have 2 'training' days first, so maybe he'll take it more easily from her.

using avent teats I brought from home as am in Kazakhstan, though they do sell avent here.. not sure about other brands..

oh well, will try again tomorrow and let you know how I get on, thanks again!

After every method known to mankind. I gave up on a bottle and moved straight to a cup - DD was aged 6.5 months old. One of the hardest ordeals of my life so you have my sympathies.
