Hi there, gently going to start to try to help my three year old to make a start on reading. Thought I would try Jolly Phonics, it is all new to me which is a good book to start with or should I get the DVD or both?

You'll find it cheapr to just use whatever is around you and play - ie collect items which begin with letter sound ? - and share books from the library. Otherwise Finger Phonics and dvd plus Parent handbook for you are a place tot start.

I would get the finger phonics books and the DVD. There is also a CD called jolly songs which is good fun. At three years old it is important to avoid too much pressure and for life to be fun. There are lots of fun phonic games that you can play which will help your three year old and not be too formal.

There are quite a few websites on the web which are free and have good resources.

www.starfall.com
www.syntheticphonics.com
www.rrf.org.uk
www.dyslexics.org.uk/
www.societyforqualityeducation.org/stairway/readingmaterial.pdf

Some of these web pages will be too old for your child, but my son loved starfall.

If at a later date you want to teach your child to read in a more serious way then the "Jolly phonics hand book will be useful". It has instructions on how to teach a child, but is designed for a reception child rather than a three year old.

Thanks to you all, plenty to be getting on with here. He is probably not going to nursery but I would hope when he starts school, a year in September, that I will have done a small ammount of the grounwork with him.
