Do I need to introduce more structure?

DS is 2.4 and is a very independant boy, likes doing his own thing. I have gotten into the habit of letting him put on Snow White in the mornings as he loves it (sometimes its' Toy Story) but mostly it's "the men, no white". He also plays with his toys and 'reads' his books. I tend to get on with work or reading while he does this, sitting beside him or on a chair nearby. I intereact with him often with kisses and cuddles and little verbal exchanges. When he's up for it we have prolonged exchanges, fun fights etc.

We go to toddlers on Mondays and am going to start music for tiddlers and tots on wednesdays and tumble tots on Thursdays - these last two being loosly structured.

When I try to read to him though he just can't stick it, gets all squirmy and takes the book off me and looks at the pictures himslef.

Does this sound okay or should I be doing more? Should I read to him anyway just to get him used to it or will he tune in when he's ready?

Monkeytrousers - sounds like you're doing great, and so is your son!

Bozza · 17/01/2007 09:57

I really don't know. Both mine loved being read to from a much earlier age than that. I assume the books are age appropriate?

Have you tried reading to him at bedtime/in the bath ? i only read to my dd once a day, either in bed or in the bath...

Vindaloo · 17/01/2007 10:09

My dd whos now 2.10 yrs is the same. she cant keep still and when you read to her she flicks the pages at great speed when I may have managed (if I am lucky) to finish one sentence!

I think you're both doing great MonkeyT

Aw, thanks Belgo!

Bozza, yes the books are all age appropriate. He just likes to 'read' them on his own though.

Bluejelly, he has a massive obbsession with lights. If his bedroom light goes on he wants to play with it and he has broken every lamp in the house. When we go to bed I only have the landing light on. What I should really fo is learn the stories and tell him them in the dark - but that's still not reading is it..? Will be easier in the summer though. I'll introduce it then.

Haha Vindaloo, that's exactly what DS does!

My dd is exactly the same. Instead of reading the story she prefers to point out things in the pictures. Usually she turns the page before I managed to read the first sentence. I have decided just to go along with what she wants and let her enjoy her books in her own way.
