Help! I have just cut her fingertip, Again!!
I can't use nailclippers (obviously!), I am far too afraid to use scissors and I don't know what I am biting, so I am afraid of that to!
Patheic huh!
What should I do!??

Scissors re the easiest to use, IMOP

ChipButty · 13/01/2007 13:03

Boots sell baby-sized nail clippers. Gently pull the pad of finger down before cutting nail. Good luck!

lulumama · 13/01/2007 13:04

wait until she is asleep and nibble very gently. honestly.. the lips and mouth are tres sensitive and you won;t bite her skin , only the nail...trust me ( having snipped DD's finger at 2 days old)

reverted to the nibbling

i thought the baby nailclippers were rubbish, too small and fiddly. i always use a normal small size one for for DD and DS. not cut either yet!

fairysnuff · 13/01/2007 14:52

Woohoo!
I managed to cut the nails on one hand whilst she was asleep in her swing! But couldn't get to the other hand cos she has slumped.
I did pull back the skin on the tips and that really helped my confidence.
I just feel so awful, that one wee finger is a mess.
But you can't put plasters on a finger that small!?
I sucked it, but it still bled a little after that.
I feel so awful.

Bite them. Honestly, it is so easy and you can feel exactly what you are biting.

popsycal · 13/01/2007 14:57

bite them while you are feeding the baby

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/01/2007 14:57

bite them

fairysnuff · 13/01/2007 14:57

I have tried nibbling but they seem so strong, I felt I would have to grind my teeth on it before I made a difference. Thats when my confidence went with that.
I used to bite my nails as a child but stopped, now I don't know how and I would be afraid of it tearing too low if I chewed at the wrong bit. Or achieving nothing if I bite too high!
Overthinking it I know, out of fear of hurting her, then I go cutting into her fingertip!
Hopefully I will get the other hand next time she sleeps and that will increase my confidence, with the clippers, for next time.

Do it after a bath if you want to but iirc young babies nails are soft enough to do anytime. Honestly give it another go. It is daunting at first but honestly far easier.

hercules1 · 13/01/2007 15:00

You just have to use your teeth to make a nick on one side, hold the nail still between your teeth and then pull along the way the nail goes across.

fairysnuff · 13/01/2007 15:06

lol! So many "just bite them"!

ok, I will try with the other hand after her bath tonight, during her evening feed.

Scared.

i would nibble rather than do the corner then rip thing though

hercules1 · 13/01/2007 15:07

I remember being aghast when the midwife refused to cut ds's nails for me and told me to bite them. Never looked back

What I never did though was suck out their snot from their nostrils as advised.

hercules1 · 13/01/2007 15:08

It has been a few years since I've done it so I may have nibbled

skibump · 13/01/2007 15:08

Sympathy! I hated doing it - I was always scared I'd hurt him. Sounds like you've got going with the clippers though, well done. I found it best to do them one or two at a time rather than expecting to do all 10 in one go It's much easier now he's bigger

skibump · 13/01/2007 15:10

Hercules...snot! Is there an emoticon for "I feel sick" ?

fairysnuff · 13/01/2007 15:28

I know! My friend had a plastic tubing thing, that meant the snot was sucked into a section and not into your mouth and I thought that sounded bad enough! Not least when her DH forgot to put that bit on and got a nasty surprise!!
That was before DD though and, although I haven't had to yet, I am sure that tubing would be a better deal than straight sucking!!

DS is 21 months now and I still haven't cut his nails I am too scared. DH or my mother do them!

Elibean · 13/01/2007 18:30

I use scissors, but only when dd is fast asleep (7 weeks old, amazingly have had to cut them twice already!)

dd1 is now three, and doesn't much like having her nails cut but succumbs to either having them done in front of a dvd, or being bribed with clear nail varnish

cruisemum1 · 13/01/2007 20:52

I haven't read any other posts but I say wait until lo is asleep and bite them.

tortoiseSHELL · 13/01/2007 20:55

I'm another biter!

cruisemum1 · 14/01/2007 09:15

it is the ONLY way! And sooo satisfying if you are a biter yourself
