DS2 is being assessed (poss autism). Anyway, DH came home just after 1 today and we went to the pub down the road with a play area. DS2 played well until he hit one young girl. She was hysterical. then right in the middle of the pub he pushed another v shy little girl who was trying to work up the courage to go into the play area. When we tried to get him to say sorry he screamed sooooo loudly it's a wonder the glasses didn't shatter. We had to leave as it was so bad

Oh Juniper, I'm sorry you've had a rough time! I've no advice or much experience in this area, but I wanted to let you know I feel for you! HUG!

Big hug to you Juniper. Can't offer advice but do offer much sympathy.

Oh, poor you Juniper. How old is he? I have no experience of this except from the other side (i.e. having the 'shy little girl'. Was he ok when you'd left?

juniper sorry I keep forgetting how old he is.... I don't have too much experience of this as ds1 tends to avoid other kids (except to occasionally pinch them to watch them scream but that's recent- and I find that really hard to know what to do tbh).

HOwever plenty of experience of just having to bail out of places. The only advice I can give is whenever you go anywhere assume it will be a total and utter disaster and that you'll have to leave. That way if it works then you feel really good and if you don't you feel really neutral and (I think this is important) you don't stop trying.

When ds1 was about 3 every trip out was such a total disaster we just stopped trying in the end. We lost all confidence in going out in public at all. Every tip home ended up with me sitting sobbing in the car and dh being in a foul mood. In the end we found that by not expecting anything we actually didn't care if it didn't work out. We stopped trying to have "fun" family days out and now we're happy to give most things a go (minus crowds). Sometimes we get a pleasant trip, sometimes we have a disaster- but now we laugh about the disasters on the way home.

Is your son usually happy to say sorry? I've found myself telling my son to say sorry before which is utterly ridiculous as he can't speak. If your son never responds well or even understands the concept then I would brave the glares and just leave. I found that by telling my son to say sorry, and him not then doing it I got even more glares than if I hadn;'t said anything at all. of course I couldn't tell him off for not saying anything as he can't speak, but geberally other people don't notice that he can't.

much sympathy. Don't be put off trying it again sometime though. (Actually that's a bit of a cheek as I have been planning to try the playpub near my parents for over a year and haven't been brave enough to do it yet).
