I've tried looking on the net, and found conflicting ages given.

When did your little ones say their 1st word? DS seems close to me, but i'm sure he's too young (6mths 3 wks)

barbie - was she saying mama etc at 4.5 months with meaning though, or just saying the words iyswim?

BarbieLovesKen · 14/01/2007 10:23

No, I don't think she knew who "mama" was but think she knew it was either her daddy or I - she would shout it if she was upset or if she couldnt reach a toy etc.. for one of us to help her. she did know who "nana" and "alva" were at 6 months though, because she would only say those words when they visited.

My DS has yet to say a word though babbles all the time (and has since about 6M) should I be worried at 1 year? I'm trying not to be but hearing about 6 months old doing it is making me ...

my dd said the odd word at about 13 months but didnt really 'talk' until her 2nd birthday. Everybody felt they had the right to comment on it. We need she understood everything and she got across what she wanted. She has now turned 3 and never stops talking, and speaks in more comprehensive sentences than some of her peers.

Dont worry.

Blandmum · 20/03/2007 14:54

dd was 11 months her first word was Teddy
da was 13 months his first word was, nope, sorry can't remember! Poor ds, deglected second child!

MerryMarigold · 20/03/2007 14:56

Don't worry prampusher! My ds is 16mo and only says one word "Ball". He says dadada but not to mean his dad, and rarely says mamama (although he CAN). Sometimes I worry, reading threads like this, but he understands loads and is bright and happy. I read to him a reasonable amount and he watches some TV and I am always talking to him, so I'm sure he will be ok in the long run. Just difficult when you compare with others (esp. girls).

prampusher · 20/03/2007 14:59

thanks MNetters... it's bad all this comparing stuff isn't it but so hard not to do. Do girls tend to talk earlier then?

Mumpbump · 20/03/2007 15:04

Ds babbled around 5/6 months - dada, mama, gaga, baba, etc. He seems to be trying to say dog - manages "duh" - at 13 months and has made a sound like "hello" when he holds the 'phone for a couple of months, but I'm not convinced it's a real word. Dh thinks he's a genius in the making, of course!!

Prettyfull · 21/03/2007 07:38

Hi, dd was babbling and especially making "ma-ma" noises at 4 months, by 5 months she could quite clearly say mumma and then dadda and nanna came along quite quick after this. I think its coz i drummed 'mamma' in to her little head lol didnt want her saying dadda first cheeky huh!! Weird though coz although she started talking early, by the time she was 1 and half my best mates dd same age was talking so much more, and now they are both 2 and half they can say the same things and are on even levels so its true when they say they all reach the same levels by about 3

twentypence · 21/03/2007 07:42

I've heard 6/7 month old babies stay "Stop" at the right place in some of the songs I do.

Ds said "Hiya" to the HV at his 9 month check and "cack cack" (quack for a duck) on the way home.
