How quickly do feet grow?

My son (turned 3 in March) has only gone up one shoe size in a year. He's now a size 8½ (UK size) which seems around average for his age and height (102cm) but I'm concerned how slowly his feet have grown. Is this normal?

This info from www.aofas.org/guidekids.asp

Children's feet grow in spurts and they require new shoes every three to four months. Most early toddlers (under 16 months of age) grow more than one-half a foot size in two months. Toddlers from age 16 to 24 months grow an average of one-half a foot size every three months. The young child, 24 to 36 months old, grows approximately one-half a foot size every four months, and children over 3 years of age experience increases of one-half a foot size every four to six months.

Hope this helps

Don't complain - it must save you a fortune, I think foot growth is similar to any other area, kids can stay as they are and not appear to grow for ages then grow like mad and need a complete new wardrobe!!
I recall my friend's ds' show size did not change at all for a whole year - then his feet grew really quickly.

That should read shoe size!!

MandyD - it varies enormously - don't worry! My eldest son has had new shoes every three months, and his first shoes were (13 months) were size 6. He's nearly 5 and is in size 12.5 already. My younger son, who is just 3, is still size 6.5 now! His feet have only gone up half a size in the last 12 months. But I'm not concerned - he's just different, that's all. And Yes, rejoice! it is cheaper! My eldest has NEVER worn out, rather than grown out of a pair of shoes.

My sons feet havnt grown in the last 5/6 months, well not enough to go up a shoe size. I agree, with shoe prices as they are Im glad, but Im sure things will change at some time, probably when he is aware of the all the other expensive trainers that are around. I have just bought a foot gauge so I can keep a rough eye instead of going to clarkes all the time.

Hi!

Newbie here! Just a very quick question for Joe1

Can I ask where you got the foot gauge from? We're just about to move to France and I would really like to be able to keep an eye on my son's foot growth.

Thanks!

I'm no expert but was curious myself. Found this resource online: www.lightandsoft.com/blogs/news/how-fast-do-toddler-feet-grow

and it says 0-3 years old kids feet could grow up to 24mm a year! They have a table for different age groups if your kiddo is older than 3.

My son has only gone up a shoe size this year. He’s an 8.5 now too. Did last year too. 3yo coming up 4.

I think once they head towards preschool age about half to one size a year is about average. My LG age 2.5 is very tall and grows like a weed but her feet have only really grown from a size 6 to a 7 in the past year. I don't think there's a right or wrong and I'd monitor their height and make sure they're growing as per their growth chart line if concerned x
