How DO you go to the supermarket with a 4 wk old and 2 year old?

Trying to mentally visualise this, and it's just not working. Won't use the internet shops as the veg is always rubbish and sell by dates too soon. When I send DH out, he only buys the minimum. We have run out of nappies for eldest and I have hardly anything in the fridge - will need to shop tomorrow. Will I have to resort to valium?

Is the valium for the kids?

Think the first time is often the worst. Remember the first time I took dd shopping and she was in a sling on my front. I was trying to hurry to get everything out of the trolley onto the check-out and it was so awkward bending forward to do it, same problem with packing the bags but with a bit of practice, you get some routine in it all. Shopping with small kids is a trial though. Best to leave them with dh and do it all then in bulk as much as possible.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2007 22:27

Instead of sending your DH out, leave him with the children and go alone.

Freckle · 09/01/2007 22:27

Do an online shop for non-perishables or bulky stuff. Then you only need nip in for veg and other stuff. In fact, if you have a farm shop near you, I'd go there for the fruit and veg anyway.

misspinkcat · 09/01/2007 22:27

God yes.

You are not the first to have babies.

stoppinattwo · 09/01/2007 22:28

Ahhh i think Margo was looking for some constructive advice, we can all be practicle, but coping strategies are useful. It is difficult getting used to the dynamics of a brand new baby and possibly energetic/ jealous 2 year old.

Margy is asking for our advice, to brush her off with a oh just go, is a bit unhelpful??, share your wisdom, nothing more

SoupDragon · 09/01/2007 22:29

But honestly, don't mentally visualise it at all, just do it. The more you build it up to be a problem, the more of a problem it will become.

stoppinattwo · 09/01/2007 22:29

or practical??

motherinferior · 09/01/2007 22:29

I would shout at your husband. At the least, it will be therapeutic.

hana · 09/01/2007 22:30

it won't be bad, I've done it too
go at a time when baby isn't hungry and the older one can be occupied with a breadstick or something!
I laugh, but I have the same thing. I sometimes go in the evening when I have the energy with just the baby, or leave baby at home if she's just been fed
hope it goes ok for you

stoppinattwo · 09/01/2007 22:30

I think that is a good way of putting it SD, If you build it up to be a huge task, it will become one.

Jimjams2 · 09/01/2007 22:32

Go to a supermarket where they have double trolleys with a baby seat and a toddler seat. Shainsbury's have them. Easy peasy if they're both in the trolley. Take a blanket whilst the baby's little so the seat is comfier/snugger and cosier.

lulumama · 09/01/2007 22:38

nope..i think an establisjed poster with a new name, not fish based!

PinkTulips · 09/01/2007 22:38

i bring dp if at all possible but that said he's abandoned me a few times in the middle of the shop

they have toddler and baby trollies which are a godsend but bring a sling in case they don't have any left so you're not waiting for someone to return one.

have a list as you'll be frazzled!

have snacks for the toddler and make sure baby is well fed before you leave the house. also make sure they're in new nappies when you leave so they'll last hopefully til you get back.

charge round with military precision (it's great as you don't have time to impule buy!)

DO NOT stop for anything.... no tantrum or screaming fit can make you stop as if you do you'll never get started agian and leave a gibbering wreck with 2 screaming babies and no food... they WILL stop crying after a few minutes!

good luck you'll need it!

funnypeculiar · 09/01/2007 22:40

Won't be as bad as you think! Go after baby has a feed - they'll probably sleep. Run round asap - ideally singing manically/wizzing trolley to amuse 2 yo - you'll look a bit of an arse, but people forgive that more than they forgive grumpy kids, ime. Don't bother with a list - but assume you might not get everything you need this time.
I can now shop sooo fast it scares DH when he goes with us!
Seriously, I was amazed how much this wasn't a big deal - don't think www is even vaguely needed - twas good for me to get out at that stage... even if only to supermarket...
Good luck
