6 month old constantly sucking thumb...

My ds seems to be sucking his thumb all the time at the moment. We've just started on solids, he sleeps well at night (other than the odd interruption which happens with solids and takes three good and regular naps a day (so not tired I don't think). Is this usual. He's been a thumb sucker since 14 weeks but I've noticed how much more he's doing it in the last week. He used to just pop it in to go off to sleep. He's rolling a lot and quite active so maybe this and the food is making him a bit quieter and more tired between activity and food ??
Anyone else experienced this?

Yeah I've noticed an increase in thumb suckage too (my dd also 6 months). I think the solids are making her a bit more tired than she used to be. It's cute. She's started to do it when she's hungry as well as when she's tired I think.

My DD is 21mnths and has been a thumb sucker since birth (one of the funniest things was watching her trying to get her thumb in her mouth as a newborn). She did it almost all her waking hours until she was old enough play with toys with her hands. She still sucks her thumb alot . I think its lovely and quite useful as it means they have a hndy comforter all the time. Some babies stop when they get teeth but mine didn't. J

I would rather my children took to a dummy then sucked their thumbs(but fortunately they have never done either) because a thumb that is constantly sucked can become chaffed and sore and even infected. If I were you, I'd offer him a dummy.

yes my dd has been doing it a lot more since she hit 6 months, she's now nearly 8 months. it doesn't bother me, i actually thought it was because i had cut down on breastfeeds so she wasn't getting as much 'suck' as she used to. she has avent magic cups for milk now, won;t take a teat.

Could it be that teeth are coming through and that is why he's sucking his thumb that much more?

My ds2 sucks his when tired or hungry or bored ! ds1 sucked his for a while and then stopped, but I think ds2 is more attached to it.
I've heard distraction is the best way to stop them doing it, so if mine carries on for too long I might try that. I don't want to make a big issue of it, but would rather he stopped before he was too old !
