Not trying to be smug!! Am genuinely interested - does anyone else baby sleep this much????

My dd is 6 months old. On average she sleeps 12-13 hours every night. She then has 2 one hour naps during the day and an additional 2 hour nap either in the morning or over lunchtime. She has always been a good sleeper, sleeping through from 11 weeks, but it is only this last month that she has slept so much! Since I started giving her breakfast and lunch I think.

Does anyone else's baby sleep about 16-17 hours a day (beyond the newborn stage)?

Sorry - meant to say - DD is seven months now.

lapinrose · 07/01/2007 18:34

I am very lucky I know, I keep quiet about it generally as I'm convinced its all about to go pear shaped!

christmasangel · 07/01/2007 18:56

LRWG - yep we get told 'just wait until this or this happens' etc and they may be right but as this thread has shown not all babies are sleepless and/or cry all the time. Am glad you're in the same boat. (It's true dp and I haven't hit teething yet though.)

Ceebee74 - can't believe your baby slept through at 3 weeks!! That must be a record. I think I was still hallucinating through lack of sleep at that point although thankfully she wasn't too long behind.

dd sometimes sleeps 12-14 hours at night, but never sleeps during the day (ok, she sleeps for about 20 minutes during the day)

Nice to have a thread about lots of sleeping!! DS1 has always slept well too, from 7-7 by 13 weeks, and never had problems with teeth etc. He's 2.7 now, and only recently dropped having a nap in the day, although if we go out with the buggy he'll still go off now... DS2 is only 18 weeks old, but sleeps 6.30-7 at least with a dream feed when I go to bed (takes all of 5 mins...), and naps 3 times in the day still - hour or so in the morning, a good 2 around lunch and again for 45 mins or so in the afternoon. I count my blessings every day, and have to remind myself how wonderful it is on those days when for some reason it doesn't work out!

(I didn't admit to it either in post natal group for DS1, but everyone still talks about my DS1 sleeping for England...)!! I think it's inherited, as I think I could actually stay in bed snoozing all day and all night sometimes....

sexkittyinwaiting · 07/01/2007 20:01

My 12 month old sleeps 13 hours at night then has to sleep again every two hours during the day for at least 1 1/2 hours each time, it's fab ,life is so much easier if you have a sleeper.

twickersmum · 07/01/2007 20:21

you wait til your next baby

christmasangel · 07/01/2007 20:28

twickersmum
It does actually put me off having another one a bit! Because I know I have lucked out with this one and if I just leave it here I'll never have to contend with a 5am start. On the other hand I have a really close friendship with my sister so don't want to deny dd that.

She's my 5th! And i've learnt that you get what you're given. Some are chilled, some are hyper, some happy, some miseries. No.6 due soon, bet I won't be so lucky next time

Miaou · 07/01/2007 20:32

ds is 17m and sleeps 13 hours at night, 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. He didn't sleep through until he was 9+ months but whenever he woke for a feed he would always go back to sleep straightaway. Dd1 was the same - she is now 9 snd still needs a lot of sleep. And she never went through a non-sleeping phase either!! (dd2 needs slightly less sleep but is still a good sleeper)

rachfran · 07/01/2007 20:33

My DD is 19 months. She sleeps 13 hours each night and has a 2 hour nap after lunch each day.
Think life is much easier if you get enough sleep.

christmasangel - it's a busy thread! I've just got back to your comment - joys and ease... This is how I've perceived it all along (give or take moments), but wondered if we have just always felt so lucky having her that anything is acceptable - 5 years and ivf and a history on a sadder thread (hut of glum, which I love visiting because while there are great joys, there are also glums, unconnected to 2 year old joyful girl.) But no, it seems not, she really has been easy, eating, sleeping, playing...
She has always got frustrated when she is unable to figure out how to do things, but a little head whacking later and she generally manages to cope. I'm being a little flippant, her moments have sometimes made me headwhack too (myself, don't worry), but it seems to me that we have been very lucky with her in all aspects. It has been relatively easy, and we still look forward, every morning, to getting her up... happy mummy...

Calmontheoutside - You must have been so happy to have her after 5 years - I reckon it must make you appreciate her even more. I'm not saying either that there's days when I don't feel a bit like it's groundhog day but those days are generally few and far between. I like being a stay at home mum very much. It makes me so sad already the thought of having to go back to work in May. The day to day changes are so nice to witness. And yes I look forward to her waking up every morning as well (guess it helps that it's normally around 7.30).

I really feel for you - I went back to work when DD was 6 months old. I was miserable even though DH was a perfect SAHD. After ten months of that, we took the terrible chance of selling, moving, and ultimately moving to France - where we have been for six months - it is SOOO cheap to live here!! I have had a perfect SAH time and don't want it to end, but for family reasons we are compelled to sell this flat, and return and when I eventually get a job in Scotland again, I think I'll have to stay in it until I'm 80 to make up for all this moving about. Still, right now these are the very best of times!
