My DS does not like to play by himself even for 5 minutes. I can't do any housework or have a minute to unwind, as it seems constant at times! My Dh says im spoiling him by picking him when he cries. He says i should just leave him, if hes been fed, slept and changed. I find it difficult to just let him cry. Am i spoiling him. Or is my DH being too harsh?

You're not spoiling him - not possible at this age.

Do you have a sling?

Ash80 · 20/12/2006 11:29

I still carry my 11mo in a ring sling - I don't mean a baby bjorn one, you're right, he's probably too heavy for that.

Try a ring or wrap sling - there are LOADS of options.

Your DH is being too harsh, IMO. Your DS can't tell you if he's too hot, too cold, too thirsty, too hungry, too lonely, too tired, etc, etc any way other than with tears.

It is really hard to adjust to having a small person around the house who needs you so much though - but I do believe that the more you meet their needs when they're tiny, the more independent they are when they're older.

I believe that when a baby's needs go unmet they are more cautious as they grow up and can be clingier.

You find it hard to let him cry because he's your baby and it's natural for you to want to hold him close. So hold him close and you'll be happier and so will he. However, if you hold him close using a sling, you'll be able to get things done a bit too Everybody's happy!

I agree - get a wrap sling like a Karri-me and cart him around with you. That's what we did and it makes for a happier baby and you can get on with some stuff. If your dh is expecting you to keep on top of all the housework, I think he needs to revise his expectations - looking after a baby is very hard work and extremely time consuming!!!

He's way too little ot enetrtain himself for long ! Also he may well be frustarted if he is just lying on the floor under a gym so perhaps a bouncy chair, car seat, door bouncer or pushcair seat would give him a better vantage point so he can watch you as you do housework, say, and you can interact.

Just want to add that my ds was just like this until he could crawl and has slowly got more and more into entertaining himself as he could do more.

To the point now he received praise in his nursery report for being able to introduce a new game to the nursery playground and explain it to all the other children and they now all play it quite a bit. (Modest - odd how that just came up .

Anyway, I'm sure he can do this because, at his insistence, I have spent heaps of time when he was little explaining things and doing things with him.

Your DS instinctively "knows" being with you will provide him with the very best of both comfort and communication/learning. It's hard on you but it doesn't last long.
