7 year old suddenly day wetting - any ideas?

Hi, newbie here! My 7 year old son, who has been dry during the day for 3 years, and dry at night for 2 years, has suddenly started getting wet patches which he doesn't know have happened. An initial urine test came back negative but GP has asked for another sample (partially I suspect to give us something to do as he doesn't seem to know what could be causing this).

GP suggests it's behavioural but I truly don't think so as there have been no changes at home or school and my son is pretty good at vocalising any problems/dislikes he has! Also he's very bouncy at present and excited about Christmas but is starting to get embarassed about the wetting even tho we are making light of it.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Was there a physical cause? I'm worried that if it is something physical it will get worse without treatment. That said, I'm not after unnecessary antibiotics.

Any ideas? All suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks - by the look of this morning's sample it is a UTI so antibiotics have been procured (GP wisely deciding not to argue with woman with steely glint in eye). Thanks for your message anyway. Fingers crossed!

I'm sure it will be a uti, but worth asking the nurse or GP at your surgery to do a simple diabetes test from his urine - they may have done this already. Is he wetting at night at all? or any thrush infections around his lower bits? I think diabetes is what Shosha is getting at, but my son had none of the classic thirst / drink symptoms because we diagnosed him early.
Hope all is well.

Possibly some thrush on bits but disappeared now, and yes, he is wetting a bit at night (although there's still a long wee in the morning so it's only intermittent leakage rather than complete loss of control). He's no more thirsty than usual. We'll finish the course of antibiotics and take it from there but thanks so much for all your suggestions which have given me ammunition if we have to go back. Have a good Christmas all!

this might be a bit silly - but my 5.5 yr old who has been dry since 2 has the odd phase of wetting the bed. It is nothing to do with health or behaviour. It is at times of the year like this where she is going to bed so tired out that she crawls into bed without popping to the loo first or is so heavily asleep she doesn?t realise what she is doing and fails to wake properly. You might find that once he is off school and able to catch up on sleep etc that he is less exhausted and it all stops.

shosha - I heard that about diabetes - isn?t it because of the thirst thing and that the child might start drinking more, esp if a drink by the bed, and wettign the bed from over full bladder and tiredness?

No, with untreated diabetes, the body is not able to absorb glucose in the normal way so there is an excess amount in the kidneys. The glucose absorbs water hence producing more urine (mixed with the excessive glucose) which is then chucked out by the body - hence more frequent urination leading to dehydration leading to thirst. I think that's along the right lines......Because of excess glucose in the body (which insulin would normally absorb into your system to create energy), thrush infections are common (anywhere) - I kept thinking my ds2 had worms all the time because he had such an itchy bum.

Good news - antibiotics seem to be working!

Great news. Have a lovely Xmas. Sorry to go off on a serious tangent about diabetes.

I had this happen with dd, lasted about 2 weeks. No uti according to urine samples. I'm convinced it wasn't behavioural as she would be genuinely shocked when it happened. She actually didn't know she was weeign until she felt her legs were wet - it was like she'd lost all sensation. GP said he'd give us another 2 days and if no better then he was going to do an urgent paed referral as he admitted he was stumped. But over the weekend the problem resolved by itself.
