Potty training - which type of seat is best? Where do you put it? OMG can't believe we're starting this....

Hi all

I'm planning to start DS on potty training in the New Year. What kind of potty is best? I have heard that the type which fits on top of the big potty is good because it's more like using the real one, and it's easier to clean. The potty you put on the floor is more kid-sized so less terrifying, but a pain to clean.

What do you all think?!?

Also was wondering where you put it. In their room? In your bathroom? There's not enough room in our WC for a separate little potty, if that's the way we go.

Thank you & happy Christmas!!

I really like the Lipski trainer seat which is a kind of seat with steps and handles which fits on the big toilet. No chance of falling in, no spills and folds down small. They can even practise standing-up weeing if you're feeling really brave!

potty needs to be accessible, so I'd have a couple - one upstairs and one downstairs

after a few goes on the potty I bought a seat that fits on top of toilet that had 2 handles on the side, and already had a footstool, it's imp that their feet aren't 'dangling' when doing poos, and also to have something to hold onto.

good luck!

There's an Aussie site called www.babiesgalore.au which has them but I got mine from a friend . Gave it a good scrub though!

We used a Mothercare potty for both dss. Initially kept it in the living room, then moved it to the downstairs bathroom - also had a potty upstairs but they both seemed to prefer going downstairs. It is a pain to have to clean it every time but IMO it makes potty trainer slightly easier as you can let them get used to it while watching telly or reading to them. With both dss they were initially slightly afraid of pooing in the potty so I think having it in the living room made them more accepting of it IYSWIM.

Now have a toilet seat, not sure which make, nephew has a Baby Bjorn one which is fine.

Hi lildrummer-I know you from antenatal thread-I have been wondering about potty training too, but didnt know the right age to start.
DD is one on boxing day and just about walking-I wondered wether to do it when she was confident on her feet, if she is before baby 2 is born in May, or will that be too young? Will she even get what Im trying to do at that age?
What age did everyone else start?

blueamema · 19/12/2006 14:54

santamum, I have been putting dd (15mths) on potty for 2 mths now. But wish I had done it sooner!
If you just put dd on it during nappy changes/before bath and see what happens? if she does anything... then just praise her. It seems to be working for me, as she now understands the word wee. Am just waiting for her to know/understand when she needs one!

Everyone does it different as I have been looking at these threads also over past few weeks.

I would have thought having another in May would be a fantastic opportunity to encourage dd that nappies are for babies and that she should move onto big girls pants? At least during the day. But what do I know!!! Good luck.

p.s you obviously ahd a busy christmas last year!!!

my ds was 2 yrs 7 months and we dispensed with potties altogether and he went straight to the loo, we used a child's loo seat which fits over the ordinary loo seat.

No worries or 'training' involved, I told him that if he needed to pee or poo he should use the loo and he did so from that day......I think we had maybe one accident with pee that week, and that was it! It's all about readiness... I personally found it easier doing it that way than struggling with mopping up pee/reading to him while sitting him on a potty/trying to encourage him to sit on a potty rather than run off!!!!!!

Thanks blue,
Mayeb I'll get one and try it then-just so she can get used to it..Its snuck up on me as the year has just flown-I cant believe she is nearly one and now another on the way!
It would be ideal if she were potty trained sooner rather than later though as then at least would only have one in nappies I guess..But I odnt want to put too much pressure on her as the new baby will be a big enough change as it is..

It was a bit different last year.I had my Christmas dinner with TENS machine on highest setting then went straight to the hospital without passing Go on the post lunch game of Monopoly!

Hiya Santa and the others, thanks for the tips

I'm following the Babywhisper's advice, which seems to have worked really well for DS so far. She recommends starting at 9months. Yes, 9 months. It's a gentle beginning, just working potty time into your routine. If you want her advice it's on the net at babywhisperer.com.

I'm motivated anyway because I can't afford to wait, with LO number 2 arriving at the end of May! Hoping if I start when DS is 10 months in January, by May we should have some progress.

As our WC is in a tiny, tiny room - prob too small for Lipski type ladder/potty - I think we'll go with a separate step and a soft potty with handles that fits into our toilet.

Main thing is, our toilet seat is COLD and it makes me wince! No heated ones on the market yet, so I figure nice, cushiony, soft, is the next best thing....

Like he's going to really care, actually?!?
