If you weaned your baby at around 4 months how much did they have? Advice

DS is 15 weeks and since last week has had purees. He has reflux and bottle refuses, so before anyone says I shouldn't wean yet, that's why. He also has good head control, teeth and has stolen my food before, so it's not me pushing for early food

He seems to want to eat loads. I stop him after a few spoonfuls but how much can I let him have? Can't find any advice about early weaning

dementedpixie no. They will only give me gaviscon which doesn't help. I've asked for ranitidine several times but keep getting told "we don't medicate babies unless absolutely necessary" and because he isn't underweight they won't. It annoys me as he's clearly in pain and struggling to feed but I don't know what else I can do.

telephone thanks, that's helpful

Zombie thanks. I've noticed DS is better, he isn't throwing the solids back and isn't as windy.

Also we used her formula milk to mash potatoes and to blend up veg etc so she was getting milk into her even with the spoon feeds.

Zombie that's brilliant thank you!

OP your baby sounds exactly like my dd1 was, you have my sympathies, feeding her was an absolute nightmare, it was so horrible seeing her so upset all of the time and not being able to do anything to help her. We saw a paediatrician but they were not willing to do anything as dd was gaining weight. On the advice of the HV we tried weaning early - by this I mean 17 weeks as any earlier can increase the likelihood of problems in the future. Could you speak to your HV again and get some further advice? In our situation weaning didn't help much as dd was also a spoon refuser so we got barely any food into her anyway.
She did get better on her own eventually. By about 9 months she was a normal happy baby. Good luck whatever you decide.

Bless you. Ignore those saying you shouldn't. It's very difficult with a baby with reflux and a dairy allergy to get them to take any milk and people need to appreciate that. We all want what's best for our babies, but they're all different and advice doesn't fit them all sadly.

So I weaned mine at four months because of the advice I was given. Mix the formula with baby rice, also add some fruit purée to taste. That way they get the nutrition. You can also do it with it ready brek. Always offer the milk first though if you can. Have you tried some vanilla essence in the bottle? That's how I got my girl to take it. Now she has it without but for a week I gradually reduced it down.

In terms of how much just keep going till they've had enough, if you're getting the formula into them then it's a good thing! Good luck x

Also go see another gp re the ranitidine. That's a joke they won't give it to you!

hazelnut thank you. I was trying to wait until 17 weeks but it's so difficult. For me DS has taken to food very well, but I will speak to someone about it. I'm desperate to not have him hurt, GPs keep telling me to just give calpol but I'd rather have him having food than paracetamol every day as I'm scared of overdosing him.

Good to hear it gets better. In between DS is such a happy baby it's just feeding and wind that are so distressing

broomy thank you. I haven't tried vanilla essence. That's really helpful as is mixing it with the food.

It's ridiculous about ranitidine. As long as he's gaining weight they refuse to help. I'm also convinced that because I have anxiety I get fobbed off as neurotic and not actually listened to.

A friends baby had reflux and she got ranitidine and it made such a difference

Def give it a go. I put it a fair few drops to start as that formula is very strong! Don't blame them for not wanting it.

It made such a difference for us. My lg would only sleep for 30 mins before we got it. Was a god send. One thing that worked for me was filming her when she was in pain pulling her legs up screaming etc. Try that? Also weight gain doesn't mean they don't have reflux! It's so exhausting but try fight your corner with it x
